Ben

“I can do it if you don’t want to.” I smile and lean back into the cushions as Mikaela paces across my living room. Her phone has been on the coffee table for the last twenty minutes and she still hasn’t touched it.

“No.” Her curls bounce as she pushes a hand through her hair and comes to a stop. “I mean, how bad can it be?”

Her eyes are wide and she pulls her shoulders up as she tilts her head to the side. I compose myself; creating a facade of cool disinterest when I shrug and glance up at her.

“He could already know. Your brother could be on his way here, right now, to kick my ass and make me stay away from you.” I grin when she glares at me.There she is. “He could be planning my murder as we speak. He could have hired a hitman. But honestly, the company makes good profit, but I doubt it’s enough for a good hitman just yet. Maybe he’ll do some saving up for that.”

Mikaela groans as she walks over to me and throws herself across the seat. I place my hands on the back of her thighs, kneading and rubbing gently and she laughs when I move to lay on top of her, nuzzling my face into the wild hair that buries her on my couch and kissing whatever skin I can find.

“Ben.”

I bury my face further into her neck and nuzzle in close. “Yes, Mik?”

“Can you do it?” She wiggles beneath me as I groan. “Please?”

“Okay.” I chuckle. “Give me the phone.”

“Mik,whereareyou?”Jamie’s voice is raised over the hammering sound of music and his words are slurred.“I’ve been looking for you forever, MikMak, and Ben’s gone too.”

As Jamie pauses, I look over to where she sits with a cushion covering the lower half of her face and I smirk. I believe we were in the elevator right around this time.

“Ben’s gone. Mik. If you’re with Ben I’m going to kill you. Or him. Are you with Ben? Ben has a girl now, Mik. I’m calling Ben and if he doesn’t answer I’m gonna -”

“Jamie, that Max guy was looking for you. Said to tell you he’s taking your sister to his because she’s drunk and lost her keys.”

I owe Xavier a drink. Maybe three.

The phone goes dead and Mik grins. “Any chance you can add an accidental extra zero to Max’s next payslip?”

My laughter is foreign to me: it has morphed into something easy and light as I tug at the cushion she’s holding on to. “Not how that works I’m afraid.”

She giggles. “Damn.”

“I wonder what the next message is?” I delete the first and wait as the next plays out, placing her phone on the table before resting my head in Mikaela’s lap. She combs her fingers through my hair and I stare up at her.

This time Jamie’s voice echoes and the sounds of men muttering and taps running makes Mik grimace.“Mikaela Wilcox. I wouldn’t kill you.”He sounds sad and Mikaela’s eyes mist almost instantly. I have never heard him sound so broken.“You know I wouldn’t kill you. If I killed you Mom would come back just to kill me.”Even his chuckle is devastating.“And after everything with Matt I shouldn’t ever say I’ll kill you. I’m sorry. I love you, MikMak.”
