Wesley switched off the television and rose. “Well, it’s a good thing we have a helicopter.”

Wesley

Jorge convinced them a noteworthy pizza place resided in town, so they opted to try it instead of flying to NYC on a stormy night. While they waited for the food to get delivered, Ava asked Jack to get started on his summer work, since they’d been sidetracked by the game.

“Why do I have to do this, Mom? I’m not even going to that school anymore.”

Wesley poured a tall glass of water, listening to mother and son debate.

“Just do it, Jack. You don’t want summer slide, do you?”

“I don’t care. I don’t want to do any schoolwork. It’s summer.”

“Nana said you were struggling with reading and comprehension.”

Jack shrank, looking miserable, shaking his head.

Ava was direct, feisty, and incredibly sexy. Wesley thought about her constantly; his pulse raced every time he got a glimpse of her walking through the house. The new Draco character had emerged, blooming in his mind. Every time Ava stepped out of the chopper, he became even more inspired. Ideas were rolling. Seeing her with Jack, as a mom, put her in a different light.

Wesley could read the indecisiveness on her face. It looked as though she’d give in to Jack. Since he’d messed up with the gift for Jack in her eyes, maybe he could help her now, gaining her appreciation.

“I could help you, Jack, if you need it. Your mom’s right about summer slide. And you want to make a good impression when you get to your new school.”

Jack sunk his chin into his fists, elbows on the table. “I don’t know.”

“If it’s okay with your mom, maybe after you get some summer work done and we eat, then we can check out a few new things the team’s been working on in the game.”

Both his and Jack’s gaze flew to Ava.

She nodded, pointing at the packet. “I better see some effort.”

The pizza arrived, and the gang filtered into the kitchen.

“Do I smell pizza?” Leroy asked.

Wesley waved them in. “I ordered enough for everyone.”

They ate around the kitchen table, family-style, in jovial conversation. To Wesley, both Jack and Ava seemed more relaxed with some schoolwork accomplished and food in their bellies. He studied Ava while she interacted with the team. Seeing her laughing and smiling became a beacon to his heart. He noted that most days Ava wore her hair loosely braided, the tail end dangling over her shoulder. Wesley liked seeing it loose, a sexy curtain. Like mahogany, her hair was shiny and threaded through with reddish hues like the polished sheen of the durable wood. The reddish-brown made the amber flecks in her green eyes come alive.

After dinner, Wesley showed Jack—and Ava, who lingered nearby, scrolling through her phone—some of the new landscapes, careful to keep his newest character, Ava’s avatar, out of sight.
