I scoffed.

“Hey, I’m a detective,” he said, all seriousness in his voice. “I detect. It’s my job to keep a watchful eye.” He pointed two fingers at his own eyes, then back around to the three of us. “Always watching,” he snickered.

“Uh-huh. I’ll remember that,” I warned.

“Come on, just show us a picture.”

“If you even have one,” Lockett taunted.

I groaned out, annoyed. “Fine,” I said and pulled up a picture of him from when we’d been at the beach.

I wasn’t happy about sharing Tyler with them at first. But after they’d all given me the thumbs up, especially Davis, who thought he was totally hot, I felt a lot lighter. I was smiling while doing paperwork. And that never happened. Sharing something with my partners, who I also considered friends, that I’d kept effectively in the dark for the past several weeks made me feel something I hadn’t felt in a while. I felt almost hopeful.

And when Davis and I were in our cruiser later in the day, and he’d told me he was happy for me, I had a sudden urge to see Tyler. I needed to see him, and I wasn’t going to wait for Wednesday. I wasn’t going to wait for him to ask to see me again.

This time, I was going to be the one to take a chance.
