“I know. Um, can I talk to you about something?”

“Sure.”

“Remember when we talked about everything that happened to me, and I told you about Julie’s brother?”

Elizabeth nodded. “Matt, right?”

“Yes. Anyway, when Julie was here last weekend, she mentioned Matt had been asking about me, and said he wanted to get in touch with me. We texted for a while last night.”

“What did he say?”

“He wants to see me. He wants to come to the Cape.”

“How do you feel about that?”

Georgiana shrugged. “I guess I’m okay with it. I don’t know.” She looked down at her hands. “I know I’ve made a lot of progress. I’m finally starting to feel like me again.”

“You’re doing great.”

“IknowI am, and not just because you and Will and my therapist say I am. Ifeellike I’m doing great.”

“So what’s holding you back?”

“He’s the one who found me...after. I can’t stop thinking about what he must have seen, what he must have thought… Part of me feels ashamed and embarrassed, though I know I shouldn’t feel that way. We used to be friends, you know? Even though I was his little sister’s best friend, we got to know each other pretty well as we got older. He's always been so sweet to me.”

“And why would that change? Why would his opinion of you change?”

Georgiana shrugged again. “I don’t know, but I’m worried it has.”

“If he’s the nice guy you say he is, I’m sure his feelings for you, whatever they are, haven’t changed at all.”

“What do you mean, whatever they are?”

“Brotherly affection, friendship… He obviously cares about you in some way.” Elizabeth squeezed Georgiana’s hand. “Do you want to see him?”

“Yes.”

“What about asking him to go to the benefit?”

Georgiana’s eyes widened. “I can’t do that!”

“Why not? It might be a good way to see him again without being alone with him. Maybe you wouldn’t feel so nervous in a group setting.” Elizabeth shrugged. “It's just a suggestion.”

“Maybe I could just see him while I’m in Boston instead, and that way he wouldn’t have to come to the Cape.”

“That’s a good idea too. You’re staying with Will, right?”

“I have to, since I don’t have my apartment anymore. Though I could stay with Mrs. Reynolds, if that would be easier for you guys.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

Georgiana grinned. “Just checking. You know, privacy and all that.”

“I'm sure we'll manage. Hey, I’m going to see if Will wants to get Thai. I have a hankering. Want to join us?”

“Thanks, but I’m going to hang out here. I have some things to sort out.”

Elizabeth rose from the couch. “Okay, but come over if you change your mind. It’s a short walk.”
