“We believe Priest wants you to become his right-hand.” Cavalno shakes his head with disbelief. “He had Will Land murdered so you could replace him.”

I scoff. “There’s no way Priest would think I’d be up for that.”

“There is if he guarantees the safety of Black Thorns,” Spartan points out.

“That’s one hell of a promise.”

“One he can never live up to.”

“Can you?” I challenge, putting it to him straight.

“You don’t fuck with our alliance and I’ve got a real good shot.”

Honesty, I like that, respect it.

Finally, he’s saying something I can get on board with.

I can’t believe what I’m about to say. The two of them watch me closely, preparing for the worst, no doubt. I wish I could go that route and just tell them both to go to hell. But this is bigger than that. And I won’t do that to Ax, I won’t put him in jeopardy just because I ain’t liking the company of these two.

So, I force the words out that need to be spoken, telling Spartan and Cavalno, “All right. You got me with you on this.”

Cavalno smiles. Spartan offers a chin lift.

“So,” I say, shifting my weight, “Knowing you two, you didn’t just show up here with the problem, you also came with a solution, yeah? So, hit me with it. What’s the plan?”

“You gotta extract Kingmaker, avoid that meet at all costs, then lay low,” Spartan tells me.

“Run and hide? That’s your solution?”

Spartan shakes his head, then smiles darkly. “No. Just the beginning.”
