“Who’s the target, Sin?”

“Rox.”

“Fuck!” I roar, slamming my fist into a nearby tree.

Char comes to me and lays a hand on my back. It cuts into the rage and terror long enough to pull me back and I suck in a breath, stealing myself. I gotta bury the emotion and worry over my daughter being in danger. That ain’t gonna help nothing.

“You want me to head out now and cut them off?”

“What’s her status?”

“She’s doing a hell of a job evading them, but, like I said, they got a lock on her with the surveillance feeds.”

“Roxana knows she’s got a tail, she ain’t gonna react well.”

“Gonna be impossible to predict with how reckless she gets when somebody’s trying to fuck with her. Jesus, definitely your daughter, yeah?”

“Like your nephew is any better. The second he hears about this, he’s gonna lose it.”

“You want me to keep this quiet?”

I shake my head to myself. “Can’t. He’s got a right to know his wife is in danger. We’ll contain whatever he tries to do. Head down there. I’m forty minutes out where I’m at. Stabilize the situation until I get there. Don’t let them get their hands on her. You distract, I’ll take them out as soon as I’m within range.”

“All right. I’m gonna pull the surveillance feeds, seeing as though I can’t override them. At least that will make it harder for them to keep a tail on her and—”

“Sin?”

I hear him muttering and cursing to himself in the background. “What’s happening?”

“I don’t know, I ain’t there!”

“Somebody’s taken over my computer.”

I start as a click sounds down the line. Once. Twice.

The next thing I know, an unfamiliar voice is filling the line. “That would be me,” some guy tells us.

“Who’s that? You hearing this too, Dealer?”

“Yeah, I am.”

“The name’s Shield,” the unfamiliar guy reveals.

“Spartan’s tech guy?” I ask.

“Not exactly the correct term, but, sure, we’ll go with that.”

“What are you doing to my shit?” Sin demands.

“I’ve taken over your system and kicked out the intruder who breached your security. I have full control of the surveillance cameras around Brockford. They can’t see a thing anymore.”

“Why? Why are you doing this?” I demand.

“Spartan’s got your back. Now, Sin, do you see what I’m bringing up on your monitor right now?”

Sin takes a beat, then tells him, “Yeah. Fuck. Dealer, Rox is headed for the turn-off onto the highway. Looks like she’s trying to head back to Reirdon Falls, Thorns territory.”

“She ain’t gonna make it,” I tell him.
