“I approve.”

“He’s not asking you, Ruby. He’s asking me. Man to man.”

“Then, be a man and give him your approval. I need your help putting this changing table together.”

“Mr. West,” I begin.

“You might as well call me Daniel. We’ll be family soon whether or not you convince my daughter to forgive you and marry you.”

Fuck. Is there a chance she won’t forgive me? She has to forgive me. My life begins and ends with her.

“You don’t think she’ll forgive me? I bought her the house she wanted to show her I’m not leaving her.”

He slaps me on the back. “That’s all I needed to hear. Now, I need to go help my better half.”

“Beer?” Lyric asks as he grabs three bottles from the refrigerator.

I hold up my hand and he tosses it to me before tossing the other one to Rowan who holds up his bottle. “Welcome to the family.”

“Knock knock.” Sage doesn’t wait for a response before charging into the house with Feather, Petal, Cayenne, and Clove hot on her heels.

I wipe a hand down my face. “You’re not supposed to know I’m here.”

Feather snorts. “Young man, if we weren’t helping to hide you in Winter Falls, Ellery would already be here giving you a piece of her mind.”

I glance at Lyric, and he nods. “It’s true. These ladies are the only reason the West sisters haven’t found out what you’re up to yet.”

“And stormed in here to demand retribution,” Rowan adds.

Retribution?

“We’ll start in the kitchen,” Sage announces before removing her coat to reveal a hot pink t-shirt with the words Gossip Gal Welcome Wagon Member on them.

“What have I done?” Rowan mumbles beside me.

“Um.” I search for the proper response. “Thank you for your offer of help, but we’re nearly finished.”

Feather bursts out laughing. “Nearly finished?” She pats my arm as she passes me.

“We are nearly finished,” I insist.

“Men.” Cayenne huffs. “They have no clue a house isn’t a home unless it’s decorated.”

“I’m an architect. I’m perfectly aware of the difference between a house and a home.”

I might not have spoken for all the effect it has. Cayenne talks over me. “Decorations are important. Where are the pictures? The knick-knacks? There’s not a single pillow on the sofa.”

“I want Ellery to put her stamp on the house. She can put up the pictures and decorate with throw pillows and whatnot.”

“Ah, isn’t he cute?” Petal reaches forward to pinch my cheeks. I don’t think anyone’s pinched my cheeks in thirty years.

“We’ll go on one condition,” Sage offers, and I can feel Rowan and Lyric inching away from me. Chickens.

“What condition?”

“I expect to babysit the baby when he arrives.”

“She,” I say automatically.
