Trent age seventeen

Ally age thirteen

Throwing my backpack over my shoulder, I walk through the school doors and down the few steps, heading toward my car. A couple of the guys call my name, asking if I’m going to the party tonight.

“I’ll be there,” I answer, already looking forward to the weekend and being able to sleep in tomorrow morning instead of getting up at the ass crack of dawn.

Most kids my age are planning for the future by picking out colleges they’ll submit applications to next year. I can’t wait to graduate and be done with school. Dad and Mia want me to go to college, but I’ve told them numerous times it’s not for me. I have no plans to leave Jaded Hollow and want to work for Nick at his construction company.

I whip out my phone from my back pocket when it pings, smiling when I see the message from Daphne.

Daphne: What time are you picking me up tonight?

My steps slow as I type out my reply.

Me: Eight. Be ready.

Daphne: I’m always ready for you, baby.

Chuckling, I slide my phone back in my pocket. As I approach the parking lot, I come to a stop when I see Aaron leaning against my car talking to Ally. The thing about living in such a small place is that there are so few kids that the elementary, middle, and high school can all fit into one building. I’ve been giving Ally a ride to school since I got my license last year.

Ally and her parents moved to Jaded Hollow when she was ten, which suited me fine because it meant I got to see her more often. She still lives with her parents, but she has her own room at Andrew and Jase’s house and frequently stays with them. That’s where I’m dropping her off today.

The muscle in my jaw twitches when Ally throws back her head and laughs at something Aaron says. It gets worse when he leans in closer to her—too fucking close. At fifteen, Aaron is only a couple of years older than Ally, but I know what boys his age constantly think about. I know because I constantly think about pussy too.

Ally is too young to be going for a boy like Aaron. She’s too fucking young to be going for any boys. A small part of me wishes she were into girls instead of guys. It would make my life so much fucking easier.

I tell myself it’s because I’m like an older protective brother, but I’m learning more and more lately that excuse is a lie.

Neither of them see me approach. I’m tempted to grab the back of Aaron’s head and slam his face into the window to mess up that pretty mug of his. I fist my hands at my sides to keep from doing just that and drop my backpack on the hood of my car with a loud thump. Ally jumps and Aaron takes a step back from her, his annoyed eyes flashing to me.

“Don’t you have a bus to catch?” I ask, pulling open the back door and throwing my backpack inside.

He gives me a dirty look before dropping his eyes back down to Ally.

“I’ll see you tonight.”

I watch as Ally smiles up at him, giving him a nod. He walks off and she turns to her door, pulling it open to get inside.

I take a moment to calm my temper before I get behind the wheel.

“How was school today?” she asks the second my door is closed.

“It was fine,” I grunt, my good mood from earlier suddenly gone.

“What’s wrong?”

Starting my car, I grip the back of her seat to look behind us. I back out of my spot and put the car in Drive. I glance at her. “Nothing’s wrong. Just ready to get home.”

She doesn’t say anything after that, and the silence is grating on my nerves. Instead of taking us straight home, I stop at the little shaved ice stand in the library parking lot.

“I thought we were going straight home?” she asks, unable to hide the excitement in her voice. Ally loves shaved ice, and it’s not often they park here in Jaded Hollow.

I shrug and open my door. “Figured we’d stop and grab one before going home.” I get out but duck my head back in the car. “Unless you’d rather not?”
