He gripped a stunning blade with a golden hilt.

I stood my ground, refusing to cower in the corner. I would take his blade while I looked into those eyes. I tilted my head up to him as he crossed the last few feet to me. I couldn’t control the shaking. My chest rose to meet the beautiful blade.

His presence was so much stronger than in my dreams. He had been a seductive mirage in my nightmares. In reality his dark strength vibrated from him, filling the entire room with an edge of energy that was almost painful. I couldn’t see it, but even without my light to guide me, I recognized his essence.

His efficient movements were all too horribly familiar. Rather in the sand or in the ocean, he was the same. He was a predator. But part of me, the ancient part, needed him so forcefully it was undeniable. The other part of me battled this instinct, knowing death was breaths away.

He extended the hand gripping his knife toward me. “You’re the one.”

I understood his words, but they were not a language that I knew.

The connection to Gray Eyes was different than the one to the creature I had killed. The link was the same in which it was tethered to my light. It was hard to sense with my light being so dim, so weak, but there was no rage or grief in the man before me. Only relief. Was that the feeling pouring from him, from the connection?

His outstretched hand went for my chest. “At last,” he breathed.

Flinching, I closed my eyes, preparing for his blade to slice into me.

How can I be so awful he is relieved to kill me?

He laid a scarred palm above where my heart beat. His splayed his long fingers wide. His thumb stroked over my sternum.

No claws.

His fingers sent a streak of lighting erupting across my mind. Chills blossomed on my neck and covered my arms.

My light.

It broke free, past the haze of drugs, and reached for him. Not to threaten, but to be closer to him. The surge was brief, a sudden tiny flicker, then it was gone.

What was my light trying to do? It couldn’t possibly want him to kill us.

I jerked back a step.

He withdrew his palm and tilted his lips into a wicked smile.

What I saw paused my next breath.

No razor-sharp teeth.

He wasn’t the creature. He was a man, I thought, but how could a man have eyes like that?

His grin was different than I had imagined. It was seductive and purely sensual. He had never smiled in my dreams.

It faded quickly into a grimace at the sound of guards yelling over the alarms.

“We leave. Now.” He pointed to the threshold he entered from and reached for my hand.

I pulled my arm away before his hand surrounded my fingers. “I’m not leaving this prison with another killer. Why don’t you just do it already?”

He turned toward me, cocking his head to the side. His dark, bronzed skin covered sharp cheekbones and a square jaw. His hair was black and beautifully braided down his back.

“My intention is not to harm you.” He extended his blade to me after he flipped the handle toward me.

He could be lying, like Logan had. He could be taking me to another prison.

“Who are you? What do you want, if you don’t want to kill me?” I took the blade from his hand but made no motion to move forward.

My light hummed slightly when my palm touched the hilt. It liked every part of this man and his blade.
