I dropped my chin to my chest and let the tears flow. Bennett moved beneath me until he was in a sitting position and then he hugged me.

Bennett was hugging me.

He placed one arm around my waist and the other between my shoulder blades, his hand cupping the back of my head. I didn’t know if it was my emotions clouding my judgment, but I let my head fall on his shoulder.

I sobbed into his shoulder as he held me close against him. My world was falling apart and yet the one who set it on fire was the one left to comfort me in the chaos. I didn’t know how long I sat there, falling apart in his arms, until I finally got a grip on my emotions and realized what he was doing. I was not about to allow him to use this against me, and I knew he was sure to make fun of me tomorrow for this display of weakness.

I pushed against him, trying to escape, but his grip on me only tightened.

“Let go of me, Bennett,” I said through gritted teeth

“I don’t want to.”

I tried to find the sarcasm in his tone but couldn’t hear it. I scoffed. “Don't act like you care.”

“Rhia, I—”

“I said let go,” I voiced sternly.

He continued to hold me for a few more seconds and then loosened his grip around me. I was out of his lap and standing in a heartbeat. He stood up after me, the starlight making his eyes look glossy as we stared into one another. Letting the unspoken stay unspoken between us.

He looked at me, not the way Miles had done, but as if he was studying me. His stare was intense, but there was no ounce of pity in it, and I was thankful for that.

“I would ask you not to speak of what happened tonight. To anyone.” I started to turn to walk away but looked back over my shoulder and said, “But I already know you can’t keep a promise.”

For a split second it almost looked like he was hurt, but I turned back before I could even give myself the time to notice, and I walked away.
