What’s wrong?

Amica did a girlish little squeal before running up to greet her man.

“Hello, beautiful,” Mendex said with no shame before pulling her in and kissing her deeply.

Bennett’s eyes tore into mine. I need to speak quickly. Something feels off tonight, I can feel it. I don’t want you going to the astronomy tower tonight. When you’re done with Amica, please go straight back to your room and lock the door. Don’t answer it for anyone. Not even me, unless I speak to you through the connection.

What the hell is going on?

Please, just trust me on this. I’ve had this intuition before, the night my mother died.

I nodded. I trust you. Will you meet me there?

As soon as I can.

“Um, hello?” Amica asked.

My head snapped away from Bennett as I gave Amica a smile to try and distract her from what would have looked like the most intense staring competition.

“Okay, well that’s not creepy at all,” she said skeptically.

Bennett clapped Mendex on the shoulder, as if all was fine and dandy. “Ready to go and give my father a recap?”

“Yes, sir,” he said, before giving Amica another quick kiss and following after Bennett.

Bennett gave me one quick look over his shoulder, his eyes as serious as ever.

Go to your room.

“You two are just so cute together,” Amica said cheerfully, and I laughed, because in her mind we didn’t even say one word to each other.

“Oh yes, we’re adorable.” I faked a yawn. “You know, I’m pretty tired, I think I’m gonna call it a night, if that’s okay with you.”

“Of course! Go get your beauty rest. I’m gonna wait here until Mendex is out of his meeting with the king.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to wait in your room?”

I wasn’t sure if Bennett’s concern just revolved around me or not, but I wanted to make sure Amica was okay in case it was the latter.

Amica gave me the I-know-you’re-not-telling-me-something look. “Why?”

I shrugged innocently. “You could take a nap?”

She looked at me, unconvinced.

I tried to think of something that could change her mind. “Well, you don’t want to stay here watching all of these men. Mendex could get jealous or hurt.”

Her expression changed immediately. “Hmm, that’s a good point. I’ll wait for him in his room.”

Well, I guess that was better than out in the open. We walked back to our living quarters arm in arm. I pretty much just listened to Amica gush over Mendex the whole way.

We stopped outside of Mendex’s door. “Anyway,” she sighed dreamily, “this is my stop! I’ll see you tomorrow for class.”

I gave her a quick hug goodbye. “See you tomorrow.”

I continued walking back to my room, and I was almost to my door when I heard, “Miss Rhiannon, King Pater requests your presence.”

I turned around to find the same royal guard who awoke me the night I left for Vicinus. He wore the typical Royal Guard uniform with a short sword strapped to his belt. His hair was shaved close to his skull, like many of the other guards.
