I gave him a scowl. "You've got it all figured out, don't you? I should have known. Your extensive experience with women has come in handy.I'm curious as to why you didn't get any of them to accompany you." I crossed my arms and shook his hand off my jaw. At this point, I was completely overwhelmed. I couldn't explain why I was upset with him.

"You're upset with me," he said almost flatly, which irritated me even more.

"No." It was silly to admit my feelings when I didn't know why I felt that way in the first place.

"Why?"

"It doesn't matter."

"So, there’s an 'it.'" I could hear a grin in his voice.

I wanted to turn around and scowl at him, but I'd done that a lot lately. I chose to ignore him, but soon his arms wrapped around me, drawing me to him until he could whisper in my ears.

"What's wrong, Vanessa?" Something about the way he said my name sent shivers down my spine. Much to my chagrin, I had realized that my reaction to Ethan had been anything but logical. I was angered at him, even furious. But I couldn't resist him when he got close to me.

"Can you explain why you're upset with me, Vanessa?" he said, nibbling on my ear.

"Many reasons," I conceded. "This isnot a date. It was an order. You didn't invite me out on a date; you orderedme to." I worriedly wrung my hands. Would he understand?

"And this bothers you?"

I nodded, not believing my own words.

"Tell me something…"

I raised my eyes to him. His face was filled with genuine curiosity.

"Would you have said 'yes' if I had asked?"

I quickly nodded. "Yes."

"What difference does it make then?"

I looked at him, wondering if he was serious. I sighed because he indeed was. "It's alright. Never mind."

"Hey, Vanessa. Don't look away."

I turned back reluctantly, feeling embarrassed for some reason. "It was silly. Never mind."

"It is not silly. If I asked, would it make you happy?"

"Yeah," I said, but I didn't look him in the eyes.

"And you're always going to say yes?"

"If I can. I might be sick or something."

"Fair. I'll refer to future engagements as invitations."

"I appreciate it." I couldn't help but smile.

He leaned into me once more. "Your smile is worth killing a man for, Vanessa." He kissed my neck, and I found myself speechless.

"I…don't…" I gasped as he slid one arm of my dress off. His lips brushed against my shoulders, leaving a trail of kisses lower and lower. I felt my nipples tighten in anticipation.

"Don't what?"

"Huh?" His words were difficult to grasp.
