"You don'twhat?"

"I don't want you killingany men."

"It's what I do, Vanessa," he said matter-of-factly.

Normally, his words would have brought me back to reality, but it didn't matter right now. My moans filled the car as I drifted deeper and deeper into his kisses. Then he drew away.

I gasped, missing his lips right above my breasts.

"We're almost there."

I rushed to adjustmy dress. Ethan fixedmy necklace gracefully, giving me just enough time to fix my hair before the car stopped.

Hegot out of the car and helped me get out too. We walked right out onto a red carpet, which was packed with photographers on both sides. Ethan extended his hand to me, which I accepted, and we walked the carpet among the flashing cameras towards the extravagant marble entrance in front of us.

"Look here, Mr. Levine," they called from one side to the other, and I could hear some of them refer to me as "Mr. Levine's date."

However, we were soon inside. The room was packed with wealthy people.

I let him show me around the room and meet a few people. I noticed Ethan smiling at me a few times, and I assumed it was because I seemed genuinely interested in the introductions. But it wasn't just that—watching Ethan introduce me to people revealed a side of him I hadn't seen before. He was a successful businessman. I noticed how he got something out of each introduction. It could have been an invitation, a reminder, a new contact, or something else. But it was fascinating to observe his social skills and how he could stand out wherever he went.

After meeting a senator and his new wife, we met a couple whowas the same age as us.

"Francis Earl," Ethan said with a stiff smile. "Fancy meetingyou here."

A woman with large fake breasts, enlarged lips, and a killer figuresat next to the man.

"I'd say the same thing about you, but someone else has my attention," Francis said, examining me with the most lustful gaze on his face.

Ethan leaned in close.

"Head of the Board or not, if you ever look at her like that again, I will ensure you never see her again."

Francis lacked the grace to appear embarrassed.

"A man can look," he argued.

I turned to face the woman standing beside him. She had a bored expression on her face.

"And you wouldn't be so rash as to throw fists like a wild savage," he said, arching his brow. "Do you really need my vote on that contract? You are by far the best candidate, but this could change quickly," this sleazy excuse for a man said with a challenging smile.

"That contract very well could—"

I took Ethan's hand in mine and steered him in the opposite direction.

"He was baiting you," I said, shaking my head.

"He spoke ofyou. I'm more than willing to be baited." His eyes twinkled as he looked behind him. When he turned around, he noticed another couple with whom he wanted to speak.

I realized that spending time with him here had numbed my rage.

We had just exchanged greetings with one of his Japanese associates when he led me to a table with a good view of the stage. On it was a name card for the Levines.

"Sit here," he said quietly. "I'll be right back."

He was gone before I could say anything. The tables around me were mostly empty or filled with couples happily chatting. I waited ten minutes, but then it felt like an eternity before I gave up waiting entirely. I wished I had my phone, a magazine, or anything else. I was also curious when the official fundraiser would begin.

It occurred to me that this was the ideal time for me to try to flee. I looked around, noting all of the exits and noticing that Ethan was nowhere to be found.
