Ethan was silent for a moment before grunting. "You know all of this because of—how many words did your uncle say to you?"

"In any other situation, your question would have made me angry, but I'm not. Do you know why?"

"Why?" he asked, hesitantly.

""Well, you're asking questions," I shrugged. "It means you're paying attention and taking meseriously." I approached him and took out the newspaper clippings.

"What exactly am I looking at?" he said.

"Evidence. I went to Uncle Fred's house today."

"You'vebeen out?"

"I snuck out," I muttered.

"I know…" Ethan stated without batting an eyelid. It made me wonder why I had kept it hidden at all.

"So there you have it. I snooped around. I trusted what he said, but I also wanted to be certain. I knew you'd need actual proof. I knew if he had truly investigated, he would have left evidence. He was that kind of guy." I forced a smile, despite the fact that my heart was clenched. That's why I had to persuade Ethan. "This is proof that he murdered my mother and father."

Ethan stared at the evidence for a long time without saying anything. His eyes were red when he finally looked up.

"I'm sure Luke arranged with one of your men to kill him the other day."

He nodded solemnly. "There will be hell to pay."

I observed Ethan folding the paper back. He then gave it to me.

I took it and locked my gaze on him. "But that's not all."

"Yeah?"

"Luke paid me a visit yesterday." Ethan remained silent, waiting for the rest of my words.

"He did. And he made me a proposal…"

* * *

"I see you think you're so clever, don't you?" Luke asked. He clenched his fists and glared angrily between Ethan and me. "I should have killed you all thosemany times I could. Your brother wasn't nearly as difficult to kill."

I gaspedas the meaning of the words dawned on me.

Ethan was on his neck before he could finish his sentence. His hands clutched Luke's throat. "What the fuck did you just say?"

Luke's wrinkled hand reached out and grabbed Ethan's. "You thought you knew everything, didn't you?" He started laughing dryly until he coughed.

"Ethan," I called out, placing my hand on his shoulder. "It's not worth it; he's just trying to provoke you."

Ethan, who was red-eyed, looked from me to Luke, who was choking, and back again before letting go of him. Luke collapsed to the ground and coughed before returning his gaze.

"You have a lot to say for a man who doesn't have a bullet in his gun," I told Luke.

He burst out laughing. "Vanessa, I killed your parents and your uncle Fred. Do you believe I'd be scared of you?" He rose to his feet.

I stopped Ethan from grabbing him again. "Leave him alone, Ethan."

"Will you listen to her and let her tell you what to do, Ethan? Let us settle this man-to-man."

Ethan's eyes hardened as he lunged for Luke. Don't fall for his ploy, Ethan. I was worried, wary of Luke despite the fact that he was cornered.
