"Don't!" I tried to yell, but it was too late. I hurried to the corner of the room, knowing that I would only annoy Ethan and not help him much. Luke wasn't acting scared. It indicated that he was up to something. He had intended to deceive me.

As my heart began to pound, I swallowed a bitter taste in my mouth.

Ethan grabbed Luke's throat and threw him against the wall. "I'm going to kill you. And I'll have a blast doing it."

Luke groaned and abruptly shoved Ethan away. Luke's gaze locked on mine, and he reached into his jacked, pulled out a knife, and lunged at me.

Ethan grabbed himby the collar and threw him across the room just as his hands closed around my neck. The knife fell, but hedid not pause. Instead, he rushed up to him, dragged him to his feet, and repeatedly punched him in the stomach before letting him fall to the ground.

Luke attempted to fight back, but it was nearly futile. Ethan repeatedly smacked his fist into hisface. Even though I loathed Luke more than scum, I couldn't help but wince in pain after each hit.

"Ethan—" I heard him beg, but Ethan didn't listen, and Luke was soon sputtering blood.

It took everything in me not to beg Ethan to stop, but I knew mercy didn't work on men like Luke. If he got a third or fourth chance, he'd do the same thing and make sure his hands were clean. He killed my father for no reason, and I knew he would hunt me for the rest of his life.

Ethan stood up, while Luke remained on the floor. I approached him, almost afraid but knowing that I had to. We had planned it together and needed to complete it together.

Luke's face was covered in blood. His eyes were swollen, and no part of his face had been spared. He was still breathing, but only just.

Ethan reached into his pocket and extracted a small revolver.

My breathing stopped, but I forced myself to keep watching. He had to die. Many more people would perish if he lived.

When Luke looked up and saw the revolver, he managed to smile despite his pain. "So you've had a gun the whole time."

"You had to suffer before you died."

"Go to hell!" Luke's eyes were filled with pure red rage. "You better hope I don't come back because I'll kill you just like your father and brother. I'm going to fucking fi—"

Ethan shot him in the chest, stopping him from speaking and doing anythingever again. I averted my gaze, a strange mix of emotions filling my chest. I turned to face Ethan.

"Ethan?"

He was staring at me blankly. "If you weren't here, I would have blown his brains out."

I shook a little, realizing it was finally over, but Ethan's tormented expression said for him it wasn't over just yet. Just before he shot him, his uncle confessed to having a hand in the murders of his father and brother.

"I should have been the one to pull the trigger," I admitted. The sight of Luke's body should have bothered me, but it didn't. For the first time, I was visibly unaffected by death.

"I would not have allowed it. Vanessa, you can't get involved in this. This is different. You needed justice, but this is too dangerous." He drew me to himself. "I could have lost you."

I let myself dissolve into his embrace. "Are you okay?" His heart was pounding fast and heavily. I raised my eyes to him.

"Fine. I'm fine," he said, turning away. "Let's get out of here."

I expected Ethan to react when Luke mentioned his brother, but he was calm and cold.

I nodded. Then the door slammed open, and Ethan shoved me behind his back.
