Epilogue

Rob put Joey into a treatment program that helped him deeply, and eventually, we were able to get to a place of distant friendship that was comfortable for everyone.

Hilde and I retired from ExploreR. Turns out she’s a big hiking fan in addition to a dog lover, and in pursuit of pleasing her, I decided we should leave the rat race of the corporate world and dedicate our time to enjoying nature.

While enjoying our own natures, of course.

Eventually, I couldn’t restrain myself, and we had a snowy wedding in the Alps. Lavishly decorated. It was the first time I’d ever met her family.

I was so nervous about meeting them, especially as their daughter’s bride, that I couldn’t sleep for weeks. But they were each sweet, kind people, just like their daughter, and though they didn’t understand the turn her life had taken, they did understand how much we loved each other.

For my wedding vow, I wrote my own, where I promised to “Make every day as sunny as her smile.”

I like to think I’m keeping the vow every day. Hilde says I am.
