“That’s a good sign, Gigi. What did he do after he chewed on it?”

“Uh, he squealed out in pain.”

“Okay, do you have a ride to the clinic? I’d like to take a look at the little fella. I can come pick you up if Trey’s not there?”

Beau ripped my phone out of my hand. “I’ll drive her down, Doc. When do you want us?” Beau paused, listening intently. “Be right down. Thanks.”

After he tossed my phone onto my bed, he stormed out. I got up and followed. “I can ask Trey to drive me. You don’t have to come.”

He didn’t answer, just grabbed the carrier and put the other puppy in it. Next, he pulled their leashes off the hook by the door. “You need anything else?” he asked, clearly annoyed.

I shook my head. “Oh, one thing,” I said, then rushed back to my room for a quick second, emerging with my purse.

We walked outside and I shut and locked the door. I spoke to him in French because of the cameras, “I can ask Trey to drive me. You can stay home and rest your knee.”

Again, Beau refused to answer. He unlatched the iron gate so we could go through. For the third time I called to him, speaking in French just in case the cameras could still hear us. “I’m serious. You’re pissed off at me, which is understandable. I’m sure Trey can drive me, or Dr. Barnes can pick me up.”

When he clicked the locks to his vehicle, he turned to me. In French, he said, “He’s not fucking picking you up. I’m driving, even though I can see right through you, Geneviève. You have a cute, little crush on the handsome doctor. Isn’t that sweet? Are you afraid I’m going to ruin your chances with him if I’m there?” he spouted off so quickly I had to take a step back.

“Are you for real?”

“Are you?”

“I’m worried about the dog. I’m not trying to get into the vet’s pants. Not everyone’s as big a player as you are, Beau.”

He actually swung his head to the side as though I’d slapped him. “You are something else, you know that? I can’t believe you’d speak to me that way.”

“Everything okay over here, folks?” Trey interrupted us as he jogged over to Beau’s Jeep. I thanked my lucky stars we’d been speaking in French and he wouldn’t have understood a word.

“We’re taking the dog in. He chewed on a cord and got shocked.” I held him out to Trey.

“Did you call Barnes?” Trey asked in a gentle voice, looking the puppy over.

“Yeah, he said to bring him in,” I said, suddenly feeling a burning sensation at the back of my throat.

“Mind if I tag along?” Trey asked, not waiting for an invitation. He opened the back door of Beau’s Jeep and got in.

I didn’t even bother to look at Beau before I hopped in the front.

“Aww,look at the little guy. Why are you the one always getting into trouble?” Dr. Barnes said while giving the puppy a thorough exam. “What did he chew on?”

I quickly answered, “A cord.”

“Right, but what kind of cord? I need to know the probable voltage,” Dr. Barnes said, setting down the puppy on the table.

Reluctantly, I pulled the damaged cord out of my purse and gave it to him. “Wow, he did a number on that. What’s the cord plug into, though, Gigi?”

Even more reluctantly, I pulled out my vibrator. Trey’s eyes almost popped right out of his skull. Then he burst out laughing harder than I’d ever heard him before. Dr. Barnes pulled the vibrator out of my hand.

“He took the vibrator, but there wasn’t much damage. I mean there was damage to the vibrator. Not the dog. Well, maybe the dog, too—we don’t really know yet. That’s why we’re here. Because of the dog. Not the vibrator. It only had a few toothmarks in it. Nothing that will stop it from working properly, though.”

Trey laughed again—he technically hadn’t stopped, but he was nearly howling now.

“At least I don’t think it will. I tested it out after Beau took it away from the naughty puppy. I mean, like, I turned it on. Not, you know, tested it, tested it. That would have been bad timing.” Oh my gosh, why did I always get so frustrated around Dr. Barnes? My rambling made this even worse.

I closed my eyes and wished for a sudden earthquake or fire alarm to take the focus off me. Trey was no help at all. He was now bent over double, trying to catch his breath.

“I see. Well I can’t say for sure, simply because none of my girlfriends have ever needed one of these. Not while they were with me, anyway. But from estimating the probable voltage and the fact he’s doing well, right now, I’d say he’s okay. If you notice a change in behavior, call me immediately.”
