And that we’d spend eternity together—or at least the next fifteen to eighteen years—playing with her and loving her up.

But, shit happened.

And part of that shit meant I lost the puppy.

“I mean, Hayley is half your responsibility, Lexi. I’ve been taking care of her by myself since you—left. It would be nice if you stepped up to the plate for me tonight.”

Yeah.

I was for sure going to punch him.

If I didn’t have my hands full of cute, furry puppy—he’d be going down.

My responsibility?

That was rich.

I couldn’t exactly tell him I’d bought the puppy for him.

Because he still thought I’d found her by the dumpster.

What an idiot.

Honestly.

She was clearly a purebred dog.

Any idiot could see that.

The fact that he didn’t, really said something.

And who in their right mind would pay thousands of dollars for a puppy and not even look for her?

Gosh, I wanted to punch him.

Of course, none of this I could shove in his face.

Being the bigger person sucked.

“I can watch her,” was all I said. Mostly because if I said one more word—it would lead to more words.

Which would lead to even more louder words.

The irritability on his face left and was replaced with something else I liked a lot better.

Only, I wasn’t allowed to like that look.

Not anymore.

His gaze trailed down my body, then back up again.

Thankfully, I was holding the puppy, so he couldn’t see the effect his eyes had on my nipples.

He looked at the TV, then back to me. “Yoga?” He frowned at me, then said, “Why don’t you just go to Jillian’s classes in the morning?”

Oh, the big stupid, hunky jerk.

“Do you need anything else? I have things to do?”
