The sooner the better.

By the time I pulled up to the rink and dragged my late self inside, the team was already on the ice.

“Damnit,” I muttered and hurried down the hall. I’d hoped to be back before now.

I rushed to suit up and get out there.

My stress level was skyrocketing by the minute, and I could already feel my body in a sweat before I stepped out on the ice.

First, the coach called me over for a quick chat. I apologized and explained where I was. I also asked her to please keep it to herself.

She’d pursed her lips and nodded, then instructed me to join the others.

My captain was less understanding. “Sleep in?” Gigi asked in a semi-cranky tone.

“No, just running late. Sorry about that.” I didn’t go into any further detail.

Because it wasn’t her business.

And, I didn’t feel like crying any more than I already had.

“Do you need to sign up for wake-up calls? This isn’t acceptable, Lexi.”

I’d shown up late exactly once.

One time.

And needing a wake-up call would mean I’d fallen asleep.

Which I absolutely had not done.

At this point, I was running on fumes. I didn’t have so much as a sip of water yet this morning.

“Sorry, Captain. It won’t happen again.” I couldn’t go into detail.

Not with her.

My coach would keep her mouth shut. I wasn’t so sure about Gigi.

Besides, if I told her where I’d been or what I’d been doing all night—and into the morning—I really wasn’t sure whose side she’d be on.

And to tell you the truth—in the fragile state I was in right now, I didn’t think I could handle that answer.

“It’s not professional. That’s all I’m saying.”

I nodded.

Swallowed back my emotions.

And apologized.

Again.

“I’m sorry, it was completely my fault.”

After that, I joined the practice.

It was a light day because we had a home game tonight.
