None of us wanted to think about it, though.

And certainly, none of us wanted to say it out loud.

Beau cleared his throat but kept his eyes on me. “You sure that’s all it is?”

“I’m fine. But, I’d be a hell of a lot better if they’d let me play.”

He nodded, then said in a low, quiet voice, “And what about your personal life?”

To that—I had to fuckin’ laugh.

And hard.

“What’s so funny?” he asked in a perturbed tone that made it even funnier.

I sat back in my chair and looked at the ice. They’d divided into two teams, and my wife was completely dominating.

Christ, I loved watching her.

“What’s so funny? What’s so funny is that I don’t seem to have a personal life anymore. Everything that happens to me—or my wife—is broadcast across the entire country. And beyond. I’d say you probably know more about my personal life than I do.”

Beau nudged my arm, and against my better judgment—I peered back over at him.

“I’ve been there, man. If you want to talk about it—” he cleared his throat, and turned more to me, “I think you should talk about it. If not to me, then to someone else.”

I looked back at the game.

It was far more interesting than anything going on here.

Lexi scored, and I smiled widely.

Her teammates whacked her on the back and on the arm.

She talked to the goalie after. Knowing Lexi, probably saying something encouraging. She hit the goalie’s leg pad with her stick, then skated back to her end.

“You still love her?” Beau asked from beside me. Christ, I wished he’d leave already.

“Of course, she’s my wife.” I narrowed my gaze at him for asking such a stupid question.

“Then why’d she file for a divorce?”

I rolled my eyes and shook my head at him. “It’s complicated, okay?”

“She claimed adultery,” he stated a fact that everyone knew.

“Yeah,” I opened my eyes widely, “and then she removed that and claimed irreconcilable differences. Haven’t you read today’s gossip yet?”

His mouth slammed shut for a few seconds.

Seemed like I got him there, at least.

It had been a relief to see Lexi must believe me, now. She hadn’t spoken to me about it—but the fact that she changed the reason behind filing for a divorce was at least one step forward.

Of course, having her give up on filing would have been the best possible scenario. But, I’d take this one small step.

“You didn’t fuck around on her?”

I practically growled, “No, I fucking didn’t. I would never do that to her.”
