“Ah, right,” Jillian said with a smile, “Trey and Lexi you’ll have to get closer for facial time. I don’t think your arms will reach.”

Light laughter followed by some of the women.

“It’s okay, I’ll sit this one out.” Lexi glared at Jillian, but Jillian didn’t let that deter her.

“No way, I have a charcoal mask I need you to try for me. The company wants reviews for all of these by tomorrow morning, so I need your help.”

Lexi rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Then you be my partner, and Gigi can go with Trey.”

Gianna spoke up right away, “Just sayin’, he’s the only guy here. And technically, he’s still your husband. No lady worth their salt is going to touch another woman’s husband. So my guess?” Her hand waved from me to her and back again. “You two are partnered up for the duration of book club tonight.”

Lexi shrank back into the couch and crossed her arms. “That’s not true at all.”

Jillian shrugged and gave Lexi a half-smile. “She’s right, honey. It’s one facial, and then we’re back into more book chat.”

A reasonable man would stand up, thank the host and the other attendees for a nice evening, and get the hell outta Dodge.

A reasonable man would realize this was not the time or place to argue with his wife—who wanted to be his ex-wife.

And, a reasonable man would probably not agree to do a facial—whatever that was.

But.

Honestly?

For some reason being around other people—yes, they happened to be women, but whatever—who loved this book and this author as much as I did—was oddly empowering. It fed my soul. A part of my soul I didn’t even know existed until I picked up my first romance novel.

Hearing what everyone had to say about the story—well, it only enriched the experience for me.

So, with tonight’s yoga, followed by book club—it dawned on me how much I was actually enjoying myself for the first time in ages.

Even though I knew the wise thing to do was leave—I wanted to stay.

I really did.

I wanted to hear what these women thought about certain parts of the book and how they related to real life.

Everything that was said hit me in some way—and made me think.

Really made me think. And I loved it.

Besides, how long could a facial actually take?

So, I did what any man in possession of his mind would not do.

I stood, walked over to Lexi, and said, “Come on, you’re being a party-pooper. Jillian’s only asking for a few minutes of our time.”

I held my hand out to her, but all she did was stare at it.

“No, thanks.” Her eyes rose to mine, and she frowned.

“You are kind of ruining the party, Lexi,” her teammate Niki whispered quietly to her. It was possibly the most words I’d ever heard Niki say in a row.

She was a great-looking redhead but mostly kept to herself or the other women.

I always thought her shyness was cute. However, because she was so quiet, I’d never really gotten to know her.

Right now, though, I wanted to hug her for speaking up.
