Dammit. Now, I’m getting pissed. My anger rising inside as I’ve kept calm, but enough is enough.

I surge forward, shoving him once more as I attempt to control myself. He stumbles back, his shoulders cracking against the wall behind him. He catches his breath, pulling a switchblade from out of his belt, his face dark red.

And then Tomas is in the doorway.

He takes in the scene passively before lunging at David when he takes off; wrapping an arm around his neck and hauling him back.

I see my chance and grab hold of David’s wrist, squeezing it hard enough to feel his bones grinding as my old friend hisses in pain, but finally drops the blade to the floor.

“Get it,” I say through clenched teeth, directing the order at Tessa. She hurries forward, picking up the knife clumsily and stepping back, her eyes on her uncle.

“I need you to calm down,” I tell David, who’s still locked in Tomas’ tight grip. “Do you think this is what I intended? To take your niece, the one I never knew you had, to bed?”

His face is still red, but I’m finding it to be more from the way Tomas had ahold of him right now—arm tight around his neck.

“Seriously, it just sort of happened,” Tessa jumps in, her voice surprisingly firm. “He didn’t force me into it, if that’s what you’re thinking.”

David grunts, struggling against Tomas and his eyes flick back to me. “Irina would fucking kill me, thenyouif she were still alive,” he spits out.

Tessa takes another step, standing at my side and I look down, catching her glistening eyes. She looks like her mother even somewhat now; beautiful and strong.

“No, she wouldn’t. I’m not helpless, you know? I can make my own choices, which I thought you could tell by now,” she says in confidence.

And when my gaze turns to meet David’s, there’s a challenging look in his eyes.

But after a moment of silence, his body goes slack and he looks back and forth between us. Slowly, Tomas loosens his hold on him and David drops to the ground, rubbing at his red throat.

He looks up at me, eyes cold, though I’ve seen worse. “All I know is you better protect her, Viktor. With everything in you.”

And there he goes, telling me what I already know to be true—I’ll take care of Tessa. The girl has found her home, just as I’ve now foundmine.

EPILOGUE

TESSA

ONE YEAR LATER…

I open the door, and here I stand face-to-face with Ricci.

I’ve seen the man a dozen times over in the files on Viktor’s desk. The man has bags under his eyes, wrinkles over his face, but he looks somewhat younger now, scared to be on Bratva property.

“Ricci,” I greet, stepping to the side of the doorway. “Come in.”

But he doesn’t really have a choice.

Tomas shoves him into the room and I notice his hands are tied tightly behind his back. I heard Ricci’s a dead man, so I take it his hands won’t be tied for long.

Despite Viktor’s fair ruling, there’s been an attempt to breach the headquarters. And the man who made the attempt is before me, taking in his surroundings. Ricci had intentions of not only getting to me, but to Viktor. But how far did he really think he could get?

“Welcome,” I say sarcastically, and Tomas pushes Ricci down onto a metal chair planted in the room.

“You’ll be dead soon, sweetie. If it’s not me, it’s—”

I laugh, interrupting his frenzied words as one thing Viktor has instilled in me is confidence. And one thing I know with Viktor in my life, I’m protected. I’msafe, especially from cruel men like the one in front of me. Hell, I’m only doing this right now since Viktor asked. He’s running late, but shouldn’t be long. And I think I can manage my own for the time being.

But Ricci looks livid. His whole body is tense, eyes searching for a way out. Though deep down, I doubt he’ll be walking out of here today. After what he did, scaring me half to death when I had just stepped out of the shower, Viktor could’ve killed him right then and there if he had the chance.

But Tomas intervened, grabbing ahold of Ricci and letting Viktor know of what happened. And now, here we are...
