Chapter Forty-Four

Callan

#

SOMEONE'S GOING TO die because I'm going to kill him. Or maybe Enzo will, he's certainly blood-thirsty enough. But whoever the hell is fucking with Aurora will pay for this shit. Like she doesn't have enough going on.

"When would they even have gotten in? We were home all day?" Oliver asks.

Aurora shudders. “That's a horrifying thought."

We live in such a safe town, we've never added more security than locks and deadbolts. Something I'm certainly regretting now.

"You two, stay with Aurora while Enzo and I will check the windows and around the house."

The last thing I want to do is leave her when she's shaken and threatened, but I know Grey and Oliver will comfort and protect her. And my instincts are demanding I go over every inch of this house until I'm sure it's safe, and I know where the threat came from.

Enzo falls into step next to me as we start outside, checking signs of tampering on all the doors and windows on the main floor. We stayed in the nest late this morning, so sometime after Aurora left before we started moving around is the only time anyone could've gotten inside without us knowing.

But Enzo had checked her room, and there wasn't a dead rose or that stench. How the fuck did someone get in?

Her father came, but he didn't go upstairs, so I don't see how he could've done it.

This is going to drive me mad with helpless fury. My pack being threatened is the best way to get me to act like a typical alpha, and I know the pack will balk against it if I start handing down demands and rules, but whoever did this got in while we were here. And probably awake.

That takes a level of skill that makes my stomach churn. If I need to, I'll put us all on lockdown.

"How the fuck did the bastard get past us?" Enzo echoes my own thoughts.

I growl. “I don't know."

"We need better security."

I wave my phone at him. “I already put in an order. It'll be here by morning."

"How are we supposed to sleep easy tonight though?" Enzo asks.

I shrug. “I don't plan to sleep at all. I'm used to all-nighters."

There’s no way I’ll be able to sleep with a possible threat outside.
