"But I was going to go to the library today,” I object.

"You're here for twelve weeks. I'm sure you'll find plenty of time to spend at the library. And you clearly got plenty of work done last night. You at least need a nap. Go this afternoon."

I huff and stomp after her. “Fine."

"Good."

It's better if Rose thinks she's winning than to try to argue with her. She's indefatigable when she gets like this. And after working all night, I definitely don't have the energy. I don't care for arguing anyway, it makes me twitchy and panicky, bringing back things better left locked up in the back of my mind.

I stumble after her into the bright sunlight, my eyes burning and a hiss coming from my mouth. She ignores me as she marches me towards the cafe a couple blocks down from our housing.

Where the omega and his beta are having breakfast together.

Goddammit.

I should’ve stayed in my nest.

Chapter Nine

THE NEW OMEGA WHO HAS our pack in knots freezes in the doorway of the cafe like a deer trapped in headlights. My amusement fades as I take in her appearance a little better, replaced with concern.

She's in the same clothes as she was when I saw her on the street yesterday, her expression drawn and pale with exhaustion. What the hell happened to her?

Ollie and I exchange alarmed glances, but he snaps out a hand to keep me seated when I start to rise. "Leave it. She's skittish enough."

Aurora shoots us a wan smile, shaking off her surprise at seeing us, and turns back to her friend who drags her towards a table at the corner of the cafe. Aurora slumps into the seat her friend shoves her into with a grimace and a rude gesture.

Even clearly going through something, she's still got fire.

I snarl. “What the hell do you think is wrong?"

Ollie squeezes my arm. “Calm down, you've got a little alpha energy at the moment."
