Catriona hauls a suitcase to the doorway and rests her hand on the knob, glancing back at me. "I'll come back for the rest of my things while you're at work. This is the last time you'll see me, Alex."

I swear she's pleading with me to beg her to stay, in her eyes if not her expression. But I'm an arrogant arsehole, so she probably isn't doing that. "Goodbye, Catriona."

She walks out the door.

For several minutes, I don't move, rooted to the spot where I'd stood when Catriona MacTaggart severed our relationship. I made her do it. I needed her to do it. Maybe I had the strength to stand up to Darnell Miller, but when it comes to the woman I love, I am a coward through and through. So yes, I make sure to be elsewhere when Cat returns for the rest of her belongings.

No, I can't watch her leave me.

I do tail Catriona to the airport, though, and watch as she shuffles into the terminal. Then I wait in the car park so I can watch her plane take off, ferrying her back to Scotland. Maybe I should be happy. I got what I wanted. The only woman I will ever love has left me, and I can go back to being a loner with a dodgy background.

But I can't go back. My life will never be the same again.
