CHAPTER9

Letting her arms hang down,Lacy stayed in front of the three-way mirror and really looked at herself. She could see Jonah’s reflection in the mirror as he returned to the bench. His eyes still had heat in them that made her want to melt.

Focus. She took her time to assess what he said. This outfit was sexy which made her uncomfortable. It showed her curves which weren’t like Claire’s or Morgan’s. She didn’t have a classic hourglass shape. But her waist was small and the outfit helped emphasize it without revealing everything, but it also showed a lot of skin.

She met Jonah’s gaze in the mirror and sucked in a breath. He liked what he saw and didn’t hide that fact. Heat rose to her cheeks and she broke the eye contact to go hide in the changing room. She didn’t know what to do with the words Jonah had put out there, but she could keep trying on clothes.

The clothes they’d picked out weren’t necessarily what she would normally buy, but she sorted through them to find something to spark joy in her. Too many of them were similar to the crop top. But a pleated plaid skirt that fell to mid-thigh and a black halter top caught her attention. Jonah had picked it out. It would show off a little more leg than she usually did and her shoulders would be bare, but she liked it.

After changing into it, she turned to look at herself in the mirror. She didn’t feel the need to cover herself, which was a good start. She tried to look at it the way Jonah might.

Or rather Logan might. After all, she was doing this so Logan might actually see her as more than his little sister to protect from the big bad wolves of the world.

“Do I need to come in?” Jonah’s low gravelly voice ricocheted through her insides like lightning. Speaking of big bad wolves. What would happen if she let him in? Would he help her undress? Would he back her up against the wall and kiss her?

Kiss her?Where the hell had that come from?

“Coming out.” She opened the curtain and stepped out, looking at the ground, trying to figure out what was going on in her brain. Sure, she was attracted to Jonah, but it was most likely because of his little sex show. It should pass.

A low whistle came out of Jonah, drawing her attention. His gaze blazed a trail of fire across her as he took her outfit in. Her knees almost gave out and her bare toes curled under his scrutiny.

If she hadn’t felt sexy before, his look told her she was, and that went straight to her head like the shots from last night. Not to mention the sparks it ignited across her skin.

To avoid his eyes and the whirlwind starting within her, she turned to the mirror. Her shoulders were completely bare. The black shirt tied around her neck and the ends of the string teased the middle of her back. Her back was exposed but no more than when wearing a swimsuit. A hint of skin showed between the shirt and skirt, but not nearly as much as the crop top.

“I don’t think I can wear a bra with this,” she mumbled more to herself as she looked at how low the back was.

“Would that make you uncomfortable?” He hadn’t moved, but his voice felt like he was right at her ear, like last night when his lips had brushed her ear when he’d leaned in to talk to her. Her whole body lit like a sparkler at the memory. She wanted his warmth to engulf her, to sink into his heat.

“Probably not, but I could always wear a strapless bra.” She met his heated gaze in the mirror. She wanted him to look at her like that. The memory of him and Candy came crashing down over her. Candy bent over the counter, skirt around her waist, and Lacy had met Jonah’s eyes. . . . Damn, Jonah’s eyes had the same look in them now as that night.

A pulse hit her between her legs. Her whole body stood at attention, waiting for him to make a move. Wanting him to make a move. To come over and show her exactly how Candy felt with him behind her, thrusting in and out. Her breath caught.

What the hell had gotten into her? Jonah didn’t want her like that. No one did. She forced her eyes closed to break the connection and took a deep breath.

“You okay?” His low growl only fanned the flames trying to engulf her.

She heard Jonah stand and she wanted to put out a hand to stop him from coming any closer, but she couldn’t. She’d never felt this way about any guy before. Like every inch of her longed for his touch.

And that was so freaking dangerous.

She didn’t need Beth to remind her of Chet and her horrible first time where she thought they’d been in love. He hadn’t cared about her at all. Her attraction to Chet was barely a candle compared to the inferno Jonah sparked within her.

This thing with Jonah would pass. It had to. She didn’t love him. He definitely didn’t love her.

Logan was the guy for her. It had been him for the past few months. She couldn’t just let what she felt go. He would be the real deal for her. He had to be. She knew it. She had to focus on Logan.

Logan’s smile warmed her heart. He always talked to her, not like the guys in her past who had ignored her. He did sweet things like making sure she had a coffee mug when they were out of reach. He included her on projects when he and Claire had a handle on it. He wasn’t just some guy who once picked up her pen in the hallway. He was part of her work life. Logan would be it for her.

She took another deep breath and opened her eyes. Jonah remained next to the bench. Concern lingered in his eyes. Her heart couldn’t stop pounding.

Forcing a smile, she said, “I’m good. I think this is it. So I owe you lunch.”

Stepping away from the mirror, she returned to the dressing room.

“Just give me a minute to change and we can go.” She tugged the curtain closed and pressed her hands over her pounding heart.

“I’ll wait out there for you.”
