She forced herself to smile. Not that it was hard when he looked at her like that. Like she was the only person in the room. He made her feel special and cared for, but he hadn’t really offered himself to her. Just his talented body to show her what sex should feel like.

“I’m good, just thinking about possibly having to work late tomorrow.”

He didn’t look convinced, but what could she say?I’ve realized I love you and that goes against everything we talked about when this thing started. Not that you’d believe me if I told you because I thought I knew what love was before, but I didn’t.

Jonah didn’t feel like a crush. He was real and flawed and everything she’d never thought she’d want. But he made her laugh and took care of her and made her feel things no one had ever made her feel before. Getting over him would take her a long time, but until he left her, she’d enjoy what she could and take anything he would give her.

“I’m subletting Brenda’s room for a few more months before getting a place of my own,” Jonah said. “I really do want to make this work.”

She nodded, knowing he was talking about his job and not about the two of them, but it didn’t stop the little part of her that hoped. The hopeless romantic. “But you are keeping your options open?”

Jonah stroked his beard. “It’s always good to know what your skills are worth in the marketplace.”

She shrugged and looked down at the cloth napkin that would be in shreds if it were paper. “I like Taylor and King. The people are good and the work is challenging, but doable. I don’t think I could leave even for more money.”

“It’s not just an experiment, Lacy. I want this to work. I’m not leaving.”

Youandyet. Those words floated in the air unsaid, but not needing to be vocalized to be felt. She didn’t want to spoil what they had by mourning him before she even lost him.

She took a deep breath and looked up into his beautiful blue eyes.

“You know I like teenage rom-coms. Young love seems so much easier and less. . . complicated than being a grown up. But I have no idea what you like to watch on TV.”

She gave him a full smile and let the worries float to the back of her mind. She would have all the time to get over him when he ended things.
