“Answer me. Are you okay?”

“Yes. I’m fine. Thanks. Just…a little stunned.” I hoped he’d think it was the fall that stunned me.

“You’re not hurt?”

“No.” At this point, I felt a flurry of different emotions, and none of them reflected my newfound Super Badass Heroine vibe. Heat flushed up my neck as embarrassment settled in. How could a small gust of wind and a tiny hole in the ground conspire to turn me into Super Klutz? Mortification also crept in when I realized that he’d probably heard me thanking my boobs while I was lying face down on the asphalt.

But, at the same time, glorious sparks of bliss went off in my body at his touch. He slid his hand from my shoulder down my arm before letting go, leaving a trail of tingles on my skin that begged for his hand to return.

I focused on his other arm still wrapped around my body as if he was hugging me from behind.

Don’t be an idiot, Lila.Stop thinking he’s always hugging you when he’s either saving you from falling or picking you up from the ground.

He loosened his grip, but this time, instead of letting go completely, he palmed my hip, his hand a weighted and welcomed presence on my body.

I didn’t want this moment to end. I was gathering up my strength to step away from him when his warm breath caressed my neck as he spoke, the sensation making my head swim.

“Good.” With a deep sigh, he let go of me, jumped back into his car, and swiftly drove away.

A cold emptiness washed over me at his sudden disappearance, but his warm handprint felt permanently branded on my hip. So much for thinking I was getting back to my normal self.

I dusted the dirt off my shirt and picked out the pebbles from my cleavage. Scanning the ground in front of me for devious potholes before resuming my walk through the parking lot, I then put one foot in front of the other toward the entrance.
