He hesitates, and I know my answer. “She might run again if I tell her you’re coming.”
“What if we all go?” Jackson asks.
Mark nods as an idea forms. “We could frame it as us wanting to see her because we do. And Luke can’t stay here by himself without protection,” he says.
“It’s flimsy as fuck, but our best bet,” Brando says.
“She’d never tell me to leave,” Jackson says, grinning at me.
I can’t help but laugh. Excitement fills the room.
“I spoke with Henry and Mike this morning. They’re on board. Oh, and uh, one more thing… she met someone.”
The room falls silent as my world stops.
“I didn’t mention it because I wasn’t sure how serious it was. But they’ve been getting closer.”
My stomach squeezes and the walls move in.
“What’s his name?” Mark asks.
“Charlie Bennett. He works on the farm for Henry and Mike.”
Was last night’s dream a premonition? It can’t be a coincidence. The name Charlie means nothing to me. Why would I have the dream version of Liv say it? I jam my hand in my hair, trying to figure out how this is possible.
Brando grips my shoulder and I’m met with all four of their concerned expressions.
“You need to fight for her, Luke. It’s time,” Jordy says.
“Is she happy Garrett? Am I just going to fuck things up for her if I show up now?” I ask, dreading the answer.
He hesitates again and my hands grip the armrests as I face the possibility of losing her forever.
“She’s trying, but she’s still conflicted. Showing up is going to rock her world, but I think that’s what she needs right now.”
I sigh and nod at Mark. Charlie is a complication, but it doesn’t matter. She’ll either find her way back to me, or she’ll be able to find the closure she needs. Either way, she’ll be happy, and that’s all I can ask for.
“We’re all coming then. I’ll call Dylan. He’ll want to come too,” Mark says.
“Sounds good,” Garrett says, a hint of relief coming through in his tone.
“Thank you, Garrett. This means more to me than you’ll ever know.”
“No problem, man. I just want her to be happy. See you soon.”
