Specter

Istareatthescreen as the video of Luke’s dad ends. I knew Infinitum killed him, just like they killed my mom, but I wasn’t aware of how deeply he was involved. “James knew everything?” I ask Raven.

“Reilly Tech funded the Infinitum trials in the beginning. He and Margo worked together. He’s the first person she told when she learned of Infinitum’s true intentions.”

“Did you help him create Nova?”

“It was a joint effort.”

“You worked with James too?”

He sighs and turns to face me. “Yes.”

“I guess he had no choice but to give them the list. Someone else’s kids versus his.”

“We thought it was the placebo list. We weren’t aware it was inaccurate. He would never knowingly put the Suttons or anyone else in danger.”

“Did you help him implant Nova?”

He nods and I smile. “Genius.”

He rubs the back of his neck with a sigh.

My phone dings and I scan the incoming text and respond. I don’t like that Raven keeps me in the dark sometimes, but I trust him. Whatever he does is for our protection.

“Sylvie says John is improving. The seizures are becoming less frequent,” he says.

“That’s great news.”

He returns to whatever he’s working on. I receive another text and smile. “Luke is on his way to Texas.”

Raven grunts his approval. “Good. You should go, too. Check in with Henry while you’re there. And our agent. He’s been… insubordinate. He’s getting too close to Liv.”

My eyebrows raise. “I’d be more than happy to knock some sense into Rainbow Bright.”

Raven’s lip quirks up at the side. “He Dream Shared with her. Liv is a Telepath and an Empath, like him,” he says.

“No wonder he can’t stay away from her.”

“He should be able to control it. He’s advanced enough.”

“I’ll remind him.”

Raven nods.

“So, this means she’s communicating with Luke?”

“Yes, though we need to figure out how. It typically only works with some kind of blood link or with other agents. This is something different.”

“Sounds like a good puzzle for Sylvie.”

“Indeed.”

He returns to his screen, and I head out to prepare for my trip. If my hunch is correct, Luke and Liv’s shared dreams will help our cause. The sooner Luke can convince Liv to come home, the better we can protect her. She has a fellow agent watching out for her and Nova has been cloaking her whereabouts, but I would feel better having her with us. The more her abilities manifest, the more she risks exposure. I smirk, knowing Luke is on his way to blow Liv’s quaint little Texas life apart. Stubborn woman deserves what’s coming.
