“You two have a good day,” Dad says when we’re heading out.

“You too, sir.” Brandon waves to him.

We quicken to the car, and he pulls onto the road.

Seconds into the ride, he stretches over to grasp my hand on my lap, stirring a syrupy feeling inside.

“How’s my little artist?” he asks. “Did you have sweet dreams? You were out before I left.”

Smiling, I tell him, “Well enough. How bout you?”

“I’ve been sleeping better. Slowly letting go.”

Watching the glee on his face, I place my other hand over his that’s holding mine. We stay like that until we reach school.

Brandon continues down the hallway, and I head in the opposite direction to the teachers’ lounge.

Ms. Jung brightens at my painting when I show it to her. “Wow. This is wonderful, Kayla. Like beauty within chaos,” she gushes. “It’s quite an intriguing depiction. The couple in the center brings it even more alive.” She looks up from the artwork. “Inspiration?”

“A personal one,” I say simply, then dip my head and breathe deeply through a rush of fuzzy emotions.

“First love is always the sweetest,” Ms. Jung mutters. “Brings out a lot of feelings.”

My head snaps up.

Flashing a smile, she nods to the door and tells me, “Don’t be late for class.”

I wave and stroll from the area, running her words through my mind on repeat as I walk to the lockers.

First love.

Am I in love with Brandon?

He perks up when I step into the English class. I keep my gaze on him without wavering.

Brandon tilts his lips into a heart-melting smile. A swarm of butterflies flood my tummy, along with an onslaught of joy, and a wildfire beneath my skin.

Oh...shit.

“Hey, Kayla,” Sam chirps, snapping me out of it.

“Hey.” I wave to her and Rajid before lowering into my usual seat beside Brandon.

He flashes a playful expression, and as he bites his lip and lowers his gaze down my body, I know what he’s thinking without having to ask.

Taking his phone out, he types quickly.

Mine vibrates in my bag right after. I retrieve it to check the screen.

A chill trickles down my spine when I read his message.

Tower after class.

I’m hungry.

Brandon winks as I glance at him.

I harrumph and look away to calm the mounting heat in my body.
