“We are growing here, too,” Matthews barked. “If you care to be down a man that you didn’t know survived in the first place, I’ll take the able body. Well, as able as he will be when he’s healed.”

“Well, you can get Rivera up to speed then. Whatever your reasons are, son, I hope they’re good. You’re giving up a position on the Galene. Room with a view and all that comes with it,” the man chuckled.

“I’m sure,” Sam deadpanned.

“Dismissed,” the Captain bellowed, and I heard a few handshakes and farewells as Sam left the room. Matthews gave only a curt dismissal. He sounded bitter about being put in his place. He was at the top of the food chain on this vessel, but not with our visitors.

The remaining men talked more about supplies, which led to a conversation about exchanges. Things were set to move between the two ships through the kitchen and the agriculture department. It made sense why the entire ship had a day off. They were moving things back and forth between vessels.

If passengers watched a helicopter land, then saw strangers go to the mess hall, take food, and leave, it would incite panic. The helicopters, even if they arrived when scheduled, would have caused enough confusion.

The crowd dispersed and left the chemistry building. My pulse was still sky high as Lori held my trembling hands.

“What do you let Dean get away with?” I uttered. “You look the other way on something, Lori. What is it?”

“He’s storing Papaver Somniferum in the kitchen fridges. I noticed the bags and threatened a recruit that was bringing them in to tell me the source.”

I gave an agitated huff. “In English please, for those of us not so kitchen inclined.”

Lori gripped my hands so tightly I felt a few knuckles pop. “It’s the poppy seed, Row. It’s the flowers in chemistry. I think Dean wants drugs on this ship.”

Before I could react, the door to the storage unit flew open.

Dean paused for only a moment before he took two huge steps forward, grabbed my arm, and dragged me out of the room.
