He squeezed my hand. “Well, see, I had to explain that their daughter hated me because I’d acted like a complete asshole and I was totally lost without her. And she’d blocked my phone number and I didn’t know where she lived, because I was a selfish dick who’d never even been to her place, so I had no way of contacting her.”

I giggled. “That’show you got my address? You asked my parents for it?”

“Yup.”

“Wow, I can’t believe they gave it to you.”

“I’m a little surprised, too. I think it helps that your mom was a little easier to win over than your dad.”

I snickered. “Yeah, I leaned on her a lot this past week. She kept telling me I should unblock your phone number, but I wasn’t having it. Gotta give Mom credit, she had a feeling you’d try to win me back.”

“Did she?”

“Uh-huh. She said she always thought you were the sentimental type, and that you just needed to meet the right girl. So I don’t think she’ll try to stand in our way or anything.” I bit my lip. “But how didDadtake it?”

“He’s still a little pissed, understandably. But I’m hopeful he’ll be okay with it in time. We ended on a good note last night, sort of.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Oh, you’ll just have to trust me.” Rust’s eyes sparkled. I could tell he was keeping something from me.

“Why? Did something happen?”

“Don’t worry about it. You’ll know soon enough,” he said. He reached for my hand and squeezed it. “But first, I need to know: will you take me back?”

I stroked my chin, pretending like I was wrestling with a tough decision—but it was all for show, of course. I didn’t let him suffer for long.

“OfcourseI’ll take you back,” I said. “As long as you think you can trust me.”

“I trust you, babe. But no more secrets, okay? Keep me in the loop. I want to know everything. You know I’ll neverjudge you or think badly of you.”

“No more secrets. I promise, Rust.”

Beaming, Rust leaned in and claimed my mouth. Butterflies flitted in my stomach as our lips fused together again. Forgiveness tastedsogood on his lips.

I leaned back wearing a coy grin. “So now that we’re not doing secrets anymore, will you tell me what’s got you all hopeful about my parents?”

He laughed. “Nice try, but you’re not getting it out of me that easily.”

“C’mon! What happened to no secrets?!”

“It’s not really a secret, though,” he said, a smile in his eyes. “It’s more of a surprise. You’ll know soon enough.”

“Fine,” I grumbled. I could tell I wasn’t going to win this one—I just had to be patient. “Hey, did I hear Minka earlier?”

“Yeah, she’s here.” He whistled. “Minka! Here, girl!”

A slow tip-tap of nails neared as she came down the hallway. She poked her head into the room and gloomily looked at Rust.

“Minka!” I said, trying to get her attention. “Here, girl!”

But Minka wasn’t as quick to bury the hatchet. She tossed her head, purposely avoiding my eyes as she walked into the bedroom and sat next to her dad, turning her back to me.

I gasped. “She hates me!”

Rust chuckled. “She doesn’t hate you. But I think she’s a little butthurt you stopped showing up.”

“Aww,” I giggled. “Come here, sweetie. I’m sorry!”
