“Yes, I’m listening, I’m thinking.” I wave him off as I sip my scotch.

I am thinking, just about the woman currently walking around with my child in her fucking stomach. I won’t mention that right now, though.

Leo spins in his chair to speak into his phone. There’s only one person he’d be willing to talk to in the middle of a strategy meeting. His wife has him by the balls, not that he’d be happy for anyone to acknowledge just how important she has become to him.

“WHAT…” Leo suddenly roars.

I’m instantly on high alert. Something is going down, and I have a really bad feeling. Max sits down in the vacant chair next to me.

Leo puts his phone on loud speaker.

“Where is Carlo? Where are you? Bea, talk to me, baby. What the fuck is going on?” Leo’s voice sounds like he’s forcing the words from his throat. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him so shaken.

“Please, Leonardo, we’re scared. We’re in the parking lot.” The terror in Beatrice’s voice is clear.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Three shots are fired, and we all jump up at lightning speed. Both Max and I are running behind Leo.

“We’re on our way, uccellino. You girls need to hide, stay somewhere safe.” He begs her to listen.

“I love you, Leonardo.” Beatrice’s declaration sounds like a stab in the chest by the look on Leo’s face.

“No, you’re not saying goodbye, amore, I’m coming for you. I promise you.”

We’re in Leo’s car, his penthouse is ten blocks from our office. But this time of day the traffic is shit.

“FUCK!” Leo slams his palm on his steering wheel.

“Get Jake on this, I want a clear fucking run,” he booms.

I pull up Jake’s number.

“Hey, what’s up?” Jake answers all chipper.

I’m momentarily lost in what I’m hearing through Leo’s phone. I can hear Cam giving Sandro shit. As much as I love her sassy mouth, all I want to do is tell her to shut it. These are not men that are going to respect her confidence. They’ll crush it out of her with their physical strength. I’m proud that she’s the one to stand up for herself, but I hate knowing that she’s doing it to protect our unborn child.

That’s my fucking job.

“Jake, Sandro and Roberto have attacked the girls in Leo’s parking lot. I need you to make a clear path of lights for us,” I grunt and hang up.

Fuck, I can hear a Mexican accent.

Juan Hernandez is there; this is so much fucking worse than we thought.

Leo’s phone goes quiet, all we can hear is muffled sounds.

BANG!

I meet Leo’s eyes in his rearview mirror.

Then we hear Beatrice’s bloodcurdling scream. “CAM!”

“FUCK!” Leo roars.

For the first time in my life, I’m speechless.

I feel like I’ve just taken a bullet to my chest.
