“No, Papa, he’s not. I promise you, he isn’t the father.” I look him straight in the eye.

“Nic, take Sergio to the guards’ office and have them call the doctor,” Papa orders.

“You can’t be serious. He should die for allowing it to even happen,” Nic spits.

I look at my brother through different eyes. I never realized he could be so cruel.

“NOW!” Papa booms. “Don’t question me, boy.”

It’s not often that Papa belittles Nic. He’s his heir, after all. But Papa is still the underboss, and his word is law.

Sergio grunts in pain as Nic drags him from the room. Momma leaves quietly, and all who are left are me, Papa, and a load of silence.

“I’m sorry, Papa,” I sob as he turns his back and heads to his drinks cabinet.

Raising his glass to his lips he, asks. “How far along is the pregnancy?”

“Ten weeks.” I confirm.

“Will you get rid of it?” He stares into his glass as he asks. I can’t read his eyes. They hold too many emotions.

“Why are you even asking her? She doesn’t get an option, Pa. She needs to get rid of it.” Nic has re-entered the office, slamming the door behind him. “She’ll be a disgrace, hell, she alreadyisa disgrace. Our whole world will call her a whore.” He sneers as he storms past me to pick up his drink.

“She’s still your sister. You will treat her with respect.” Papa’s voice sounds deadly.

“Respect? She lost my respect when she spread her legs like a common slut. She’s a disappointment, Pa. You need to make her get rid of it.” I flinch at Nic’s words.

I know our men can be evil, I know they’re killers, but I’ve never had so much venom directed toward me. Especially not from Nic. He’s always been the best big brother.

“So, I have a slut for a daughter and a gay for a son. I would think this is God punishing me for all my sins.” Papa mumbles into his drink.

I’m taken aback that he just called me a slut, but I’m even more shocked that he just called Nic gay. What is he talking about? Our world is shallow and narrow-minded. There are no gay made men. Well, there are, but the hypocrisy of our world makes them hide it. But I had no idea Nic was gay, and more so, that Papa knows.

I raise my brows in shock.

“Pa,” Nic pleads.

“So, I should force your sister to abort her bastard child, but I should allow you and Antonio to continue your relationship?” Papa tilts his head in question.

Antonio, Oh. My. God!

I had no idea Ant and Nic were together. I mean, sure, they are always together, but they’re best friends, they’re both to be underboss. How will that work? They will both surely have to marry.

“You refuse a wife. For all I know, Carmella is carrying a boy. Seeing as you are not fit or willing to bear heirs, shemay be carrying the future underboss of Boston,” Papa seethes as he stares out the window.

“That’s not possible,” I mumble.

“What did you say?” Papa turns to me.

“I said that’s not possible, if this is a boy, for him to rule Boston,” I explain.

“Because it’s the bastard child of some random. Pa, Cam’s child could never rule this city.” Nic pleads his case with my papa.

I’ve had enough of them referring to my baby as a bastard. My baby is innocent.

“No, my baby won’t rule over Boston. If I have a son, he’ll be the heir of Philadelphia.” I lift my chin defiantly.

Fuck!
