“Chill, brother, cut the kid some slack. He’s not wrong in his assumption, and you know it,” Enzo drawls as he slides up next to Jake and ruffles his hair.

Jake’s seventeen, not much younger than Enzo’s twenty-three years. but in our world, we age into men much younger.

“It’s fine, Jake, just be sure to put tracers on their phones now,” Leo grumbles as he looks down apologetically at Bea who is glaring at him for waking Sofia.

Andrea is still fast asleep in his crib.

“Right, I’ve got the address. It looks like it’s Jade’s old apartment.” Jake states, still looking a tad guilty over his obvious fuck up.

“You still paying for the apartment, Alessandro?” Max questions, oblivious to my wife’s feelings at such an insensitive question.

Fuck, the guy is going to spend the majority of his married life in the fucking dog house if he doesn’t learn some tact.

Cam tilts her head up and awaits my answer. I can see the fear of my answer in her eyes.

“No. I stopped paying for it after I found out she was spying on me, the day before Cam got shot.” I look at Cam as I answer, telling her in not so many words what she wants to hear.

She mouthsthank you.

I lean down and place a kiss to the side of her lips.

“Right, we need to get over there now. I’ll call Carlo. Enzo, I want you to stay here with the girls too,” Leo states as he leans down to place a kiss on Sofia’s head.

“No fucking way, I’m no babysitter. Call someone else in. I can be utilized somewhere more important,” Enzo huffs as he frowns at his brother.

“It wasn’t a fucking request, Enzo. It was an order, and you will follow it, little brother.”

Leo always puts Enzo in his place by reminding him of his rank. He doesn’t do it with me or Max, but when it comes to these two, there’s always a battle. Typical brothers, I guess.

Enzo doesn’t protest, but he looks far from impressed.

“Enzo, there’s no job more important than protecting these girls. My fucking girls. It should be seen as an honor, you ungrateful little shit. I’m not leaving them under-guarded. It could be a trap. We know how much the bastard likes his games.” Leo growls as he pulls Bea into him squishing Sofia between them. He leans down and whispers in her ear.

“Jake, I want you to stay here with eyes on us. I’ll call Sam on the way. You can communicate with him.” Leo nods at all of us and heads out the door.

Sam is a friend of mine and Leo’s, who also happens to be the deputy chief for the NYPD. He’s obviously concerned about witnesses in the apartment building, having Sam present will put other residents at ease should anything kick off.

“Please be careful, Al.” I look down into Cam’s beautiful blues staring back up at me.

“I’ll be fine, angelo, promise me you’ll stay here. I don’t want you or Andrea leaving this apartment.”

“We won’t, I promise.” She leans up and places a kiss to my chin.

We say goodbye to the girls and make our way to Max’s apartment, where Leo is waiting for us.

With eyes on the building, Jake determines there are no obvious guards on the entrance. Just to be sure, though, we decide to split up and take the front and back entrance. Sam is less recognizable, so he’s meeting Leo and they’re entering separately through the front. Max and I will go through the back entrance. With only four of us, we’re short on numbers. But thanks to my colossal fuck up, we don’t have much choice. Sam has a few of his men that are on our pay role scoping the area and communicating with Jake and us, but that’s all we have.

We’ve all been fitted with an earpiece so we can still communicate. We wouldn’t involve civilians in our attack but Hernández sure as hell will.

Max and I enter through the back of the building. There are two janitors at the bottom of the back stairwell. Just as we’re about to pass them, I clock the shorter guy pulling something from behind his back. I already have my silencer aimed at him as he points his 9mm at Max. Barging into Max but hardly moving him, I manage to put a bullet between the janitor’s eyes. The larger of the two aims his 9mm at me, but Max manages to knock it out of his hand before he gets his shot away. Max has his knife in the second guy’s throat before he can alert anyone we’re here.

“Stupid fuckers,” Max grumbles as he wipes his knife on his victim.

“Them or us?” I smirk.

I know for a fact neither of us doubted they were janitors. If I hadn’t clocked his 9mm, we’d both be dead.
