He pauses and says gruffly, “Both,” then takes the stairs two at a time. “Twenty-seventh floor, right?”
“Yeah.”
As we enter the main lobby, Leo is dragging two bodies into a store closet while Sam follows behind with two more.
“Looks like you fuckers had more fun. Max and I nearly had our heads blown off.”
I grimace as Max smacks me round the head. “Did he need to know we’re stupid fuckers?” Max questions.
Sam chuckles as he walks over to me and clasps my shoulder. “Good to see you, mate.”
“It’s been too long, brother.” I grin as I slap him on the back. I haven’t seen him since my wedding.
Sam went to school with Leo and me, ironic how we ended up on opposite ends of the law. Although Sam’s closer to our side than he likes to admit.
When we reach the twenty-seventh floor, we make our way toward Jade’s apartment. Two men patrolling the corridor spot us, and the darker-haired one turns as if to raise the alarm, while the other raise his Glock. Using my silencer, I shoot the fucker currently raising his gun first. Max dashes forward to stop him falling to the ground, not wanting to raise the alarm ourselves. Leo makes quick work of hitting the other square in the shoulder blades with his knife. Not deterred from the knife currently sticking out his back, the guy stumbles into the apartment. We follow the fucker into the hall as two more men come barreling toward us from the living area of Jade’s apartment. I don’t manage to pull my trigger quick enough and end up getting blindsided by a third guy coming out of the bathroom.
I’m slammed into the wall but managed to elbow the bastard in the chest. Momentarily winding him, I push him toward Leo, who ends him with a knife to the heart. I take note of Sam as he manages to put a bullet in one of the other fuckers. Then as I adjust my shoulder which is definitely dislocated, I hear screams coming from the master suite. Max is currently wrestling with the last of the men, and from the massive ‘crack’, Max has most definitely just snapped the cunt’s neck.
“Alessandro,” Leo grabs my arm as I attempt to run toward Jade’s screams. Wrapping his arm around my chest he pulls on my arm, putting my shoulder back in its socket.
“Argh,” I groan as I shift my arm around that hurts like a motherfucker.
I pull out of Leo’s hold and stand in front of the master’s door. Leo stands on the other side of the door and nods at me as I swing the door open.
What I don’t expect to find is Jade’s naked body, lying silently limp on her bed. I rush over to her and note the blueish tinge to her white skin.
“FUCK!” I roar.
I pull at the other side of the comforter, pulling it over her lifeless body.
I vaguely register Jade’s screams coming to an abrupt stop as Leo pulls the plug of the TV from the socket.
They fucking recorded her abuse.
I pull Jade’s body into my chest as I apologize repeatedly for bringing her into my world.
“Give him a minute,” Leo orders Max and Sam, blocking the entrance to the room.
Laying Jade back down on her silk sheets, my frustration turns to anger.
“They have my fucking kid, Leo,” I growl as I storm toward him.
Leo places a firm hand on each of my shoulders. “We’ll find your child, Alessandro. I swear it on my honor, we won’t rest until we do.
It’s strange feeling this way. Guilt is something I’ve only ever felt when it comes to Cam. But the guilt I feel for Jade’s death, this will surely destroy me. If not now, then when I finally meet my child. I’ll have to one day look them in the eye and admit that I failed them and their mother.
After spending three hours waiting for our undertaker who deals with the bodies in our world, I wait to assist the clean-up crew who ask no questions as Jade’s lifeless body has already been moved.
Leo places a hand on my shoulder and squeezes. It’s as much comfort that we would ever show each other, but it still means a lot.
He nor Max say a word as we head for the car in silence.
