Al pulls me back into his chest, holding me tightly as he addresses her.

“I never meant for this to happen, Jackie. Jade betrayed me, sold information to the cartel, missed her shot and got pregnant so she could blackmail me. I’ve killed for less. I did not bring anyone to your door, that’s on Jade. I am, however, interested in getting in contact with the man threatening you. I want my child.” Al keeps his calm as he addresses her.

“Don’t you see, that’s why he’s threatening me. Jade knew she messed up, she thought she could play this Mexican guy but was in way over her head. She quickly figured out he’s a psycho. She slipped her guards, disappeared nine months pregnant and ready to pop.” She shakes her head, looking toward the rest of the group, then back to us. “She’d visited me and they’d followed her, she used me to slip her guard. They knew where I lived. They used me and my son to bring her back. She came back without the baby, they dragged her out of my house. That’s the last time I saw her.” She starts to cry. “Please, if not for me, then my son. We are innocent in this.” She’s not quite sure who to beg as she looks between Al and Leo.

“So, he doesn’t have my child?” Al questions.

“No, and before you ask, I don’t know where your baby is. All I know is that Jade said she was going to see a friend that used to live here in New York.”

Even after her shitty entrance, I feel sorry for this woman. She’s been brought into this world through no fault of her own.

The hallway is silent until Leo speaks.

“I’ll give you my protection.”
