Stephanie slid her plate of lasagna over to Jason."You save lives, while I provide an escape.So, mine wasn’t quite that intense, but thanks for putting things in perspective.”They shared a smile.
“Eat.We don’t want this to get cold.And leave room for dessert.”
“Figured one of us could take the dinner home.Bachelor’s live on leftovers."She liked the easy conversation."Now you want dessert?"
"We’ll enjoy it, even if we’re stuffed.Like we used to do, remember?”
She did.They laughed, talked, and ate their way through dinner, even fighting for the last speck of cream on the plate of tiramisu.
Steph relaxed in the moment.
"We need to do this again."Jason slid his hand across the table and captured hers.
She flipped her palm, so they clasped fingers."I should say no, but it wouldn't be fair.I haven't heard your story yet.”Not wanting the night to be over, she whispered, “Next week?"
"Tomorrow wouldn't be soon enough for me, but yes.I'll accept next week."
After he paid the bill, Jason escorted her across the street.Under the green lantern light, he turned her to face him, his kind blue eyes searching hers."I enjoyed this, Steph."
"So did I."
She stepped back but he pulled her toward him.He tilted her chin and gave her a soft gentle kiss that made her want more.
"Don't forget about tomorrow."
Stephanie shivered in the cool night."Forget what?"
"I'm picking you up and we're going together to see Nicole.Ten-thirty sharp.Don't be late."
"I'll remember."She blew him a kiss, then headed to the back of the building to the outside stairs, not making any promises.
