His brief hope eclipsed."Just let me know when you're ready. When I'm not at work in the hospital I can be your handyman."

She flushed again, and Jason decided it was the perfect exit.Don't over-do the visit.Be cool.

Heading home in his new car, he saw a text from Laura. The pretty young radiologist whom he'd spoken with this morning wanted to know how he was feeling and whether she could bring over some chicken soup.It was seven p.m., he was hungry, but not in the mood for company.

Although she didn't set his heart on fire, she was a very nice girl wanting what he did.A person to spend her life with, children, a home.

He hit redial and she picked up at once.

"Jason!"Laura answered in surprise."Did I tempt you with the chicken soup? Can I drop by?"

"I have a better idea. How about I pick you up tomorrow night—if I'm not needed and it's a slow night. You can be the first to ride in my new car.Choose your favorite restaurant, make us a reservation, and let's have a pleasant night.I sure could use one."

"Yes, but you know it's not too late.I could still come over."

"Not tonight.I'm ready to collapse."

"Okay."Laura sounded disappointed but then perked up."So, tell me.What did you buy?A Ferrari?No, you're not that type.How about a Porsche.Red or black?"

"Not even close.Something that'll hug the road and be safe for winter driving."He chuckled."It can even drive itself."

"No way."

"Way."He was smiling now.Stephanie was right.Women in his profession liked him a lot better than she did.
