“Yes, please.”

Sitting on the couch, I watch as Hannah makes me a coffee.

“Do you want cream or sugar?”

“Just black.”

With a mug in hand, she walks it over to me. “Will you be okay here?”

“Yes, thank you, Hannah. I have a lot of work to catch up on.”

“Okay, well, I should get back. Do you need anything else? Will I see you on set tomorrow?”

Shrugging, I ask, “Is Kris on set tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

“Then yes, I’ll be here. Ahh, do you think Andy has a notepad and pen I could have?”

Hannah smiles and walks over to his desk. She picks up a yellow notepad and a pen from it and hands them to me. “I’m sure he won’t mind if you use these. See you tomorrow with your books.”

With a wave, she bounds out of the office, leaving me with a hot cup of coffee and my first alone time in what feels like forever.

***

Lost in my imaginary world, I’ve been writing for hours. It’s not until Kris clears his voice that I realize he’s in the room with me.

“Hey, beautiful, you ready for home?”

Standing, I stretch, and my muscles welcome the movement. “What time is it?”

“Late. Sorry, things ran over. We’ve been here for four hours.”

Frowning, I widen my eyes at him. “We told Shannon and Todd we’d only be a couple of hours.”

Kris slips an arm around my waist and guides me out of the office and the building.

“I phoned Todd to tell him we’d be late. Shannon has made us dinner, and she said it would keep, whatever that means.”

Squeezing him as we walk together, I say, “It means it’s something she can either keep on the stove or in the oven that won’t spoil. Like spaghetti sauce or meatloaf that can be reheated.” Kris gives me a sideways glance. “Trust me when I tell you, it’ll be good. Shannon works for TB for a reason, and it’s not just because she waits tables. Shannon can cook too.”

“So, more than a pretty face?”

“More than you realize,” I reply with a wink.

Shannon is tall and heavyset with personality, but her size has never held her back. At home in Boothbay, Shannon is outgoing with her brightly dyed red hair and flamboyant outfits. She makes everyone feel special and included. I’ve often wondered why she’s single.

Shannon has dated a few men at home but never seems to stay with them for long, and it amazes me how she keeps them as friends. It will be a strong man who’ll tame her or keep up with her.

“You admire her?”

“Oh, yeah. You should see her at home. Shannon wears what she wants, talks like she wants, and, well… does what she wants. I wish I were more like her.”

Kris frowns. “Babe, you do all that.”

“No. Shannon is fearless.”

Kris shakes his head as we climb into the back of the waiting car. “So are you. You just don’t know it.”
