Mama lifted her head when I stood. “Where are you going?”

“To join in the meeting. They are discussing me, are they not?”

“It is better to leave this to your father, Felicity.”

Felicity.My mother rarely called me by my whole name, and yet Lissy had not been spoken from her lips since before I disappointed her. I drew in a breath. “I cannot leave my future in the hands of other people. Surely they would not begrudge me an audience, at the very least.”

I had always been quiet and reserved, often opting to read over any social option presented to me. I never made a fuss, and I did not give my parents much grief. I had always been a proper daughter, and my actions before now had given my parents cause to believe me immediately when I told them I did nothing untoward with the gentleman in the library. Should that not extend to now?

“Your father would not like it.”

“Then he may turn me away,” I said and left the room. I was grateful Mama did not stop me.
