He shakes his head slowly in disbelief. The air suddenly feels thick, and I need to find a means for escape soon. “Leia...I can explain the other morning,” he says in a careful tone.

The tears are welling up again. “I’m not sure if I want to hear it, Nick,” I say.

Whatever the case may be, there’s no excuse for why my panties went missing, I was sore, and I woke up wearing someone’s shirt. He opens his mouth to say something, but he stops himself and turns around to Sarah.

I’m tempted to smile at the glare she’s giving him.

“I’m not gonna hurt her,” he deadpans.

“I’m not taking your word forshitanymore, dude.” This time, I do smile. I love her, but maybe wedoneed to be alone to talk.

“Sarah,” I whisper. “It’s okay, we’ll just be a minute.”

She raises her eyebrows. I know, I must sound insane right now. But I don’t want to jump to conclusions—that’s never worked for me in the first place—and ruin a friendship without the full details.

She shakes her head at me in disbelief, but I give her a small smile for reassurance. I need to make decisions for myself. I need to know the full story, because I amfreaking outright now.

Sighing, she gives him one last glare before walking out the door. He turns back to me.

“Leia, youhaveto know I’dneverhurt you.” I raise my eyebrows. Considering what brought us here, that’s a load. He flinches. “Well, not intentionally, anyway,” he jokes.

I give him a small smile. I feel some relief.Some.

“I want to believe you, Nick. But I don’t rememberanything. I was basically naked in bed. Like what thefuck?” How can he explain this? He has a concerned look on his face, as the bob in his throat goes up and down. He’s hiding something from me.

JAKE

I’m so fucking numb, I can barely move.

My father beat me to a pulp, and all I could do was limp over to the only person who would care.Leia. We may be on the outs right now, but I trust her more than anyone.

I’m not sure how I did it, but I made it to her dorm room. Knocking on the door, I’m greeted by a comfortable Nick, wearing basketball shorts and a T-shirt.

“Jake? What are you doing here?”

I wish this guy would just disappear forever. He’s like a fucking roach.

“Is Leia here?” I strain.

He looks me up and down, amused.One. Good. Punch.“Why?”

“Do I need to answer toyou?” His questions are starting to piss me off.

“Jake?” Her small voice trails into the hallway as she appears at the door in pajama pants and a tank top. Moving past Nick, I limp past them both. Her face grows worried as she sees my face. “MyGod, what happened to you?!”

“I’m so sorry, Allie,” I whisper, putting my forehead against hers. She closes her eyes and slowly rubs her forehead against mine.God, I’ve missed this.

“Jake, what’s happening to you?” It sounds like a simple question, but it’s loaded. It’s loaded withsomuch.

“I’m a shell of a man without you, babe,” I can barely croak out. That’s the most telling statement I’ve said to her.

Her breath suddenly hitches. I was hoping not to tell her that underthesecircumstances. But this run-around is fucking stupid.

“Leia, what’s going on?”

Annoyed with him interrupting, I groan and sit on her bed. This should be fun.

“Nick, can we meet later and talk about...that?” ‘That’? I frown.
