Journey glanced inside. “A gift? What’s the occasion?” she asked and pulled out the square black velvet box.

He reclaimed his position on the bed. “Just open it.”

She lifted the lid and sucked in a breath. Inside was the most beautiful platinum heart-shaped locket she’d ever seen. It was hanging from a silver chain, and there were words in script lettering across the front.

She swallowed hard as she read the inscription. You’re always in our hearts.

“Oh, Laz,” she whispered, getting choked up at the sentiment.

He pulled her against him and kissed the side of her head. “Open the locket.”

She did, and inside the charm was a photo of him on the left. Journey smiled, surprised that he had used a picture of himself smiling when he was always trying to look intimidating. On the right side was a picture of her daughter’s precious face.

“Ohhh…” she said with her hand on her chest and then looked up at Laz. “Thank you, baby. This is so beautiful and extremely thoughtful.”

He carefully pulled the jewelry from the box. When he tried to unclasp it, Journey took over, then fastened the necklace around her neck.

“I need you to wear it at all times,” he said, and she nodded. “The diamond at the top of the heart conceals a GPS chip, and it works even if you’re deep in a cave. I never want to experience not being able to find you again.” Journey started to speak, but he spoke over her. “And I promise, just like with the watch, I’ll only have you tracked if there is an emergency.”

“I know, and I’m not worried about that. What I was going to say is, I want my watch back. It was so much more than a tracker. It was one of the first gifts you ever gave me. It’s sentimental.”

Laz studied her for a few minutes before saying, “Is that why Kenton had to put you in a headlock to get it off your wrist?”

Journey’s mouth dropped open. “What? Is that what he told you?”

Laz flashed a crooked grin, then laughed. “Nah, I’m just messing with you.”

She swatted his good arm.

“But I did hear that you didn’t want to give it up.”

“The watch means everything to me, but I also thought he was taking it because you no longer wanted me protected.”

Laz reached into the drawer of the nightstand and pulled out the watch. “I had a feeling that’s what you thought, but Jay, I’ll never stop protecting you. My life is nothing without you. Don’t you know that? Yeah, we had our problems, and I know I said some things, but that was just me being an ass. I love you, baby. Don’t ever doubt that. I’m a hundred percent committed to you and the life that we’ve built.”

Journey swallowed, trying not to get emotional. Whenever she thought she couldn’t love him anymore, he said or did something that contradicted that.

“Have I mentioned how much I love you?” she asked, her heart overflowing with love.

“Umm, yeah. I think you have mentioned it a few times, but maybe you can show me.”

A smile spread across her face, and she pushed him back against the pillows. “I think I can handle that.”

Journey covered his mouth with hers and kissed him, knowing without a doubt they were going to spend the rest of their lives loving each other.
