Chapter25

HARPER

Harper rubbed her eyes and rolled over, savoring the cozy warmth. She snuggled beneath the quilt and tucked the edge under her chin. Relaxed and at ease, she sighed. Boy, she’d had the loopiest dreams—dreams where she’d smelled colors, tasted sounds, and heard inanimate objects. She’d floated through the day, observing herself from above. There, but not there, engaged but delightfully aloof.

She yawned and burrowed into the softness when muffled voices followed by a bout of laughter drifted down from the second floor.

Was she still dreaming?

And then a song played. A song with a punk rock edge she recognized.

Penny’s sisters can suck an egg, suck an egg, a dozen eggs.

Penny’s sisters can suck those eggs. Suck them until chickens hatch in your mouth.

The lyrics were rough, childish, and ridiculous, but she’d been a rough, ridiculous child when she’d written them.

Wait, why was she hearing a song she’d written almost twenty years ago?

She shot up and tossed the quilt to the floor, bolting from her comfortable cocoon.

The snippet of the song played again. And again, it was met with rolling laughter.

Had she fallen through a rip in the universe, broken the laws of physics, and gone back in time?

She sure as hell better not be trapped in the kid version of herself.

No, that was crazy talk. But as her brain haze cleared, flashes of cookies and a choir carouseled through her mind.

She rubbed her temples, then spied two items in front of her on the coffee table.

A glass of water and a rectangular pastry box.

She focused on the glass of water. It had a note withdrink metaped to the side.

Weird.

She slid her gaze to the box—a box from Cupid Bakery with a Post-it note printed witheat metaped to the top.

This was one hell of an Alice in Wonderland moment.

Her stomach growled in response.

There was the answer.

She opened the delicate box and feasted her eyes on half a dozen chocolates.

This was the way to wake up.

She helped herself to two butterscotch bonbons and washed them down with the water.

The sugar hit her system, and she reclined onto the sofa.

What time was it?

What day was it?

It was as if she’d lived a thousand lifetimes across the cosmos and had returned to her body here on earth.
