ChapterFour

DONOVAN

The information finally came back on the woman whose truck now sat in Grace’s garage.

Savannah Bellows. Former art student; held a few waitressing jobs. Nothing permanent. But something didn’t sit right with me, so I dug deeper into the trenches of my contacts.

What came back had me widening my eyes in surprise. But my gut had been on the money.

The stranger who had broken down too close to Moonlight Creek to make me comfortable wasn’t Savannah Bellows. She was Savannah Cayden. A bounty hunter from Idaho.

Goddamn, I’d laughed at that. Not that I found it funny. More in exasperation, and slightly impressed she’d found the creek.

Anger had burned in me at her audacity, and my wolf had called for me to shift, to run through the woods and hunt her down. The man in me wanted to confront her, tell her to go fuck herself after demanding who’d hired her. But I already knew. There was only one person who would hire a bounty hunter to come to our town, and that was Gideon fucking Fletcher.

Grabbing my keys, I left the office to hunt her down at The Pinewood Inn. Grace had begrudgingly told me where the hunter was staying and that she’d loaned her the garage car. I chose to take my truck so as not to risk running into anyone and getting distracted by them asking why I looked ready to kill.

Grace’s Firenze pulled up outside the inn not long after I did. I’d parked further down and waited, taking advantage of me getting there first.

Twenty-six, hailing from Idaho, I’d learned the bounty hunter worked with her uncle, William Cayden. A drunk. A gambler. A half-assed bounty hunter who operated a business called Hunt Thy Neighbor.Great name. I rolled my eyes. And he’d sent his niece to do his dirty work. Or she was the one more desperate for the finder’s fee.

A woman. I shook my head in disbelief. A woman had hunted me down. Not that I didn’t appreciate equality. I’d seen firsthand what women could do. But the women I’d experienced used words, manipulation, and emotional blackmail to succeed. Not their fists. And certainly not against a six-foot-five, seasoned fighter wolfkin who’d lived for over a hundred years. What chance did she stand against me?

She found you.

Yeah. She had. That made her dangerous. It also forced me into a corner to take out Gideon Fletcher once and for all. I’d speak to the alliance about it soon. The fucker had been an irritating thorn in my side for too long.

But what am I going to do about her?

Savannah got out of the car and closed the door behind her. She looked good. Too fucking good. Her long dark hair fell down her back. Hints of honey shone in the strands when the light hit. And her body. Curve after curve, her ass swaying as she walked, stirred my traitorous cock. But she had muscle, too. I could see it in her shoulders and in her toned legs revealed by her tight jeans as she walked toward the inn. My body reacted too readily at the sight of her—my mouth eager to taste and suckle on those breasts that jiggled when she walked.

Oh, for fuck’s sake, pull it together, Donovan.

But her…

My wolf sat up and took notice, urging me to sniff the air. Lowering the window, I did so, but only because we needed her scent.

Bad fucking decision.

Savannah’s scent tickled my nose, and my wolf howled.Iwanted to howl. But I’d long ago learned to control my instincts when the wolf in me tried to take over. Lust like I’d never known, fed its way from my nose to my cock, to my limbs, through my mind. Images of fucking her, those tits bouncing up and down, demanding more, raked at my self-control.

No.

No and no.

I was tired, that’s all. She smelled sweet. So what? She smelled of deeper promise. Who gave a fuck?

I didn’t. Even though I needed one.

Everleigh.

I’d contact Everleigh soon and get it out of my system.

I needed a plan. A plan to counteract Savannah and learn all she knew about Gideon, so I could turn it against the prick and eliminate him for good.

Yes.

That grounded me.
