“What are you doing?”

“Concealing.” She did something fancy with an opening in the lining then shoved the gun inside. She found a shirt, threw it on, then put the jacket on top of it. “The safety’s on. Stop worrying.”

“You’re carrying a damn gun.”

“I’m not a wolf, remember? I don’t have fangs for protection. Now let’s move.”

I didn’t like this. I didn’t want her taking a gun into a blind situation. Wolves could die from bullets. So could humans, and I didn’t want her, or anyone in the town, harmed. But Savannah wasn’t waiting. She grabbed her shoes, and my car keys, and headed out to my truck.

“She’s gonna be the death of me,” I muttered, following her out and snatching the keys from her so I could drive. “Stay quiet,” I ordered, needing to remain alert, and we drove into town.

Weaving the final turn, the town came into view.

As sure as hell, three black SUVs had parked up in the main square, and men were already piling out. One I recognized straight away.

Victor Hyde.

“Stay in the truck,” I warned, my wolf rising close to the surface. I climbed out and slammed the door shut, and predictably, Savannah didn’t listen. She got out with me to see a huge brute of a man dragging someone out of the passenger seat of one of the SUVs.

“Will,” Savannah whispered, taking a step forward. I stopped her, and she whimpered at them manhandling her uncle.

A few of the townspeople had roused, coming out to see what was going on. I wanted to yell at them to stay back, to get the hell out of here, but I daren’t. Not yet.

Gideon, dressed in a white suit, a matching Stetson on his head, got out of one of the jeeps with a sneer on his face.

“I’ve got to say,” he said, looking around, “you’ve done well for yourself, Warren. Looks like staying away all these years paid off for me after all.”

“What do you want?” I growled, my wolf so close to shifting at the threat. But I had to keep him back until I fully understood what we were up against. More of my people came forward, crowding the edge of the square.

“Donovan?” Doctor Rose asked, still in her night robe, tentatively stepping forth with her wife. “What’s going on?”

“Stay back, Rose,” I ordered quietly, and thankfully, she obeyed.

“I’m sure some of you remember me?” Gideon roared with laughter, addressing his forming audience. His eyes landed on Emily, who’d rushed in next to Frank. “I’m sure you two do.”

Emily’s face paled.

“And you, Savannah,” Gideon said, tutting and shaking his head. “You’re a naughty girl, shacking up with the man I sent you to hunt.”

A few gasps came from the onlookers at the truth of Savannah’s reason for being here. But that wasn’t important. Not right now.

Shit.

Grace appeared, running up to join the crowd in her PJs and slippers. Her mom and dad piled in beside her.

Keep away, Gracie, I silently pleaded.

“Will,” Savannah snapped, her voice shaky with fear. “Are you okay?”

Her uncle, a tall man, gangly and gaunt with a mop of dark hair, stood in front of one of Gideon’s men. He wore a long, worn leather jacket hanging to his knees and a filthy Mötley Crüe shirt beneath it.

“Hey Savvy,” he said gruffly with a weak smile. “Don’t you worry about me now? D’ya hear?”

“Oh, she has plenty to worry about,” Gideon sneered. “She betrayed me. Betrayed you. And she needs to learn the consequences.” He nodded to the man closest to Will who obeyed orders and punched Will hard in the stomach. The man collapsed to his knees and took a kick to the face that knocked him to the ground.

“Will!” Savannah leaped but I caught her by the waist. She fought me, addressing Gideon. “Hurt him and I’ll make you pay, you son of a bitch!”

Gideon laughed. “You’re not in a position to make threats, sweetheart. Be grateful that the woman who called me to tell you of your deceit and Warren’s location has put me in a better mood.”
