“Yeah yeah I know. Now let me see that hand.” I lifted up my arm finally noticing the glass in my hand. “Jeez Luke! Sit down while I find a first aid kit.”

“There’s one in my pickup.” Kim pointed a questioning look at me as we rounded the bar. “Kaci. She insisted I keep one with me at all times.”

A sad smile formed on her face. “I’ll be right back.”

Sitting there alone in the bar I felt a tear roll down my cheek. The door opened and Kim rushed back in with the bag I’ve had for years in her hand. I scrubbed a hand down my face trying to erase the evidence of my pain.

“Drake will be here soon.”

I let the tears fall. The pain in my hand is nothing compared to the pain in my chest.

“I miss her so much.”

“I know honey.” She began to pick the glass out of my hand. “Luke this is really bleeding you’re probably going to need stiches.”

“No just put the super glue on it when the glass is out.”

“Okay I got all the pieces.” She held up a bottle from the red bag examining it. “This stuff has been expired for six years. Don’t move.”

Kim hauled around to the back side where all the liquor bottles were kept. A bottle of cheap Vodka was in her hands when she came back. “This is the closest shit to rubbing alcohol I’ve got.”

I hissed as she poured the liquid on. Dabbing it dry with some cotton thing next she got out the bottle of gorilla glue I threw in there. Squeezing it out on the bigger cuts she waved a coaster over it to make it dry quicker. Once it was dry she wrapped it in more of the cotton stuff then something that was similar to vet wrap.

“You’re all set. I’m gonna start getting ready to close up okay?”

I nodded my head. With Kim in the back room and me being the only person in the bar it was complete silence. Right now the silence was too loud. It made me think of Kaci. I laid my head down on the bar and pictured Kaci. Her smile. Her laughter. How her hair always bounced when she talked. Damn her. I reached for my phone and pulled up her name. As I pressed call I headed outside.

“Hi Luke.” Her voice sounded gravely like she had just woken up.

“I miss you Kac.” I let the tears fall again.

“I miss you too Luke.”

“Then come back to me baby.”

“Someday.” My chest was being sliced open more everyday. More at the sound of her voice. “Luke, are you okay?”

“No.” The word was barely audible. “I’m not.”

“Me either. But we can’t do this.”

“Yeah.” I breathed. “I love you.”

“I know. Goodnight.” The line went dead.

Sinking down the wall I rested my arms on my knees hanging my head. I woke up to headlights flashing in my eyes. Lifting my head up everything spun. Drake’s face came into view. Heading back into the bar I slumped back on a stool.

“You look like shit man.”

“I feel like shit.”

“He’s nursing a broken heart. Leave him be!” Kim came around the corner. “Here Luke drink this.”

Gulping down the water I got to my feet.

“Mom what do you need help with before we go?” Drake moved behind the bar.

“Drake will you shut all the signs off and Luke would you mind wiping down the bar?”

“Okay.” We both spoke at the same time.
