CHAPTER17

Antonio watched her sleep, wondering for the thousandth time what the hell had happened to get her on El Cuchillo’s radar. How had he known about her?

He’d begged Abuela to help him get her out, but she’d simply shook her head.

“The women don’t leave this place that way. The only way they leave is a bad way, or death.”

She had said she knew where to get some Naloxone, which would help get the drug out of her system. He would take it. He desperately needed her to be lucid. And the fact she didn’t remember him was only temporary.

When she figured out who he was, she would put the pieces together. She was smart. That was one of the reasons he loved her.

Abuela had seen that. And she’d warned him against it. Not that he needed the warning. If his boss or even Hector figured out how much she meant to him, they would use it against him. Again, something he didn’t need a reminder of.

He had to pretend to hate her. That was the worst part of all this. Until he figured out how to get her out, she would hate him. There would be no hope. But the only way he could keep her from being killed was if they hated each other.

He spun around in his chair, settling his fingers on the keyboard. Were they even listening anymore?

Sorry I wasn’t online for the battle royale last night. Something serious came up at work. I’m going to have to shut down my business and am trying to figure things out.

Code for abort. It was his last choice. There wasn’t a way to get out now. Not with her. El Cuchillo was onto him, for sure.

As he typed, something occurred to him.

They’d known about Katie.

It had to be this fucking computer setup.

Antonio did a quick search on his computer and was surprised, for once. It was rare that anything surprised him these days, but the last couple were fucking full of them.

A keystroke tracking software had been installed on his computer six months ago.

Assholes hadn’t trusted him for six fucking months. They’d seen everything he’d typed, including his messages in his group, his messages to Katie, and his traps for the women.

Messages of well-wishes and virtual hugs were bombarding him on his left screen, the one the game was on. His tribe was giving him support for his decision to shut down his import business. Had he given anything away in his messages there? Or had they just figured out about Katie?

He thought hard. His stuff in the game was all in code. The monitoring messages he was giving them were coded to look like talk about an import/export business.

When he’d outlined his plans to trap women, that was his cover as well.

But they’d seen his messages to Katie. They’d seen the explicit messages they’d shared. Not the pictures or video or the Discord stuff they’d done live, but enough.

It didn’t matter who had done it. Probably Hector, although Abuela had the most access to his room.

He rubbed his eyes, trying to straighten out his thoughts.

He was so screwed.

Antonio popped a pill, going to the fridge for some juice.

He couldn’t trust anyone.

When Abuela returned with the medicine, he injected Katie, hoping like hell it was what Abuela said it was.
