“It’s your problem because if I’m not feeling comfortable, you can’t feel comfortable,” I said.

I sensed the moment her demeanor changed, the way the conversation kicked up a notch.

“Is that another veiled threat?” she asked.

I wasn’t sure how she was responding to that idea, only knew that she was responding.

“No. It’s not a threat. But, while I know you’re a woman of your word, I need more assurances.”

I was doing this because of Elias, but also because it was right.

I figured I had Amethyst pegged, but my family’s business didn’t survive, and we didn’t stay alive and out of jail, on gut feelings and assurances.

I needed more, and if I wasn’t going to eliminate her, I had to have something. I’d figured it would come to this but had been hoping it wouldn’t.

“Okay. Well, how can I do that?” she asked.

She was wary now, and I missed the lightness, fleeting though it was, of our earlier moments together.

“I think I have an incentive that will keep you on the path should you be tempted to stray.”

“Do I even want to know what the fuck that means?” She arched a brow at me.

“Probably not. But it’s in your best interest that you do,” I said.

“Okay,” she said, looking exhausted.

“Take a look,” I said, nodding at the envelope I had placed on the table.

“Okay,” she said again, still looking exhausted but also worried. And curious.

She opened the envelope, pulled out the folder, then flipped through the pictures.

Her expression dropped.

“How did you take these?” she asked, looking up at me, her expression stricken.

“It was simple. I rigged something up on the roof of SUV. From the look of those, I had the angle just right,” I said.

She looked down at the pictures again, ones that showed the kiss we had shared. There was no way to capture the passion of the moment with the same intensity, but these pictures did a pretty good job.

“What is this supposed to be?” she asked, clearly regaining her composure, not a hint of wariness or fear to be seen.

All I saw was disgust.

I didn’t like it, but I pushed on, knowing I couldn’t stop now.

“These pictures are something that you should keep in mind if you decide you want to violate our arrangement,” I said.

“I told you I wasn’t going to,” she responded tightly.

“I know, and I told you I need assurances.”

“So what? We kissed. What does that matter?”

“Because, my dear, we didn’t just kiss,” I said.

“What are you talking about, Davit?”
